    Jurg,
I am hoping to have more information in a couple of days. My manufacturer is running a bit behind on his "real" work, so my stuff has been delayed. I can't complain because he is doing me a favor by running my parts.

    Patience, Grasshopper....

I have a high-resolution laser scanner but I urge caution to those that think the process of scanning and subsequent RP is straightforward.

About the laser scanner, couldn't you do a little fill work with clay before you scan so the 3D model would be just about ready to go from there?

Chris - it's not the original model that's the problem. Laser scanners produce huge quantities of "dumb" data. Mine has a 0.1 mm resolution. A square centimeter of model surface gives 10,000 data points. A large item in the scanner can produce a gigabyte of raw data. The challenge is turning this data into useable solid models. It can be done but it is time-consuming and needs some serious number-crunching power.

I built me a "Number Cruncher to do just that... Crunch!

I call it the Shark Tank, and it's clocked to crunch, and has a striped (RAID 0) pair of 10KRPM drives, plus all the memory needed to do the job of crunching 3D goodness. I tested it by calculating Pi to 32 million decimal places in exactly 30 minutes. Search that out on the web for Super Pi speeds to compare if you are not sure what it means:

And I hat to consider heat, where fans could not do the job alone so I outfit it with liquid cooling:

I kept all the extra fluff out of the box, as it's intended to crunch, not to do everything else that normal people do with a computer. A guy's allowed to have more than one hobby ain't he?

haha! When I tried to load tetris on it, all I could see was the "enter your high score" screen, but the score was only 300. I thought something was wrong, so I tried "Missle Command and all I got was the "Game Over" screen. Then I got a clue.... :D

    Funny stuff! :shade:

My wife, who don't know jack about computers, except how to use them. Well her girlfriend's husband just bought a new computer, an Athlon FX55 based system with a gig and a 7200R drive. My wife needed to use it for a minute, and accidently said "GeeZ, this thing is kinda slow", at which time Steve came running in the room all disturbed saying what's wrong with it? He could not find anything wrong, but was not really happy at what Kim said about his new toy.

A couple weeks later while dropping off tax stuff (my wife and his wife have a small business together), Steve stepped in for a few minutes and seen the Shark Tank (I like to name my computers) at the desk. Had a kind of pasty look on his face then he told me what Kim said was bothering him about his computer, so I said "try it out" He has DSl and I have DSLpro, but the DSLAM is less than 1000 feet from my house. He downloaded a 25 meg .pdf in seconds then clicked it open instantly. Woah! That is fast. I said, sustains 6Mb/sec downloads so intenet is fast, and although my video is not the fastest available, the combination of the 6800 card and the 10K drive snap the big files open with authority! move along... Next? :eek:mg:
