I want to fit M/T couplers to my Bachmann 2-8-0, and it is recommended that 1128 (I think) are used for the tender, and 2004 for the pilot.

The 1128 are the 'T' shank ones, I think, which I don't like much, anyone tried fitting any other type?

How easy is it to fit a 2004 to the pilot? At first glance, it seems way too big. I would love to hear from folks who have fitted the couplers before tackling mine.

    Thanks.

The N Scale Supply website describes the conversion. They used the 2004 box with 1015 coupler shanks inside (for both tender and pilot). That's the way I intend to go. I have ordered the parts but haven't received them yet. I can report back the details after I do the conversion if you are interested.

Mike Skibbe from our NTRAK Club has used the
Kato 800001 Body Mount Knuckle Coupler. (this is the coupler that was on the rear of the Business Car and is a different design than the truck mount couplers)
He just mounted it directly to the pilot deck using an 00-90 screw.
The couper is semi-automatic (it will couple automatically as long as it is lined up) and has a good appearance for the pilot.

Shazbat! Use the 800000 or 800002.... both Silver color.... the Black 800001 is out of stock.
    Sorry about that.

Allan...I have put MT couplers on four Bachmann 2-8-0's now using two different types of MT couplers front and rear. I've also just finished putting MT couplers on the pilots of four Con-Cor Hudsons.

Carving out the pilots on these engines takes a bit of courage, but the result looks excellent if you have brain surgeon finger control and 20/20 vision. If you lived closer I'd offer to do it for you. The bandages come off the fingers tomorrow.

If you want to communicate with me off train board, perhaps I can get some good enough closeups with my digital camera to show you what I did on the front pilot of the 2-8-0 and under the tender. I can't post pictures on Trainboard yet.

I can also send you a picture of an adaption I built from pieces off a Minitrix Pacific tender. It makes a hood that snaps into position and turns the 2-8-0 coal tender into an oil tender, without modifying the Bachmann tender. That makes it a believable engine for Railfanning on a layout that is modeling the modern era of diesels.

Is that really Charlie Vlk? Welcome aboard [IMG] (No, I have not forgotten transition-era modellers) :D

Gary, if you email the photos to me, I can put them into this topic if you wish, and you can add the words [IMG]

Charlie, thanks for the information ... and welcome to the TrainBoard!

I hope to have my B&M 2-8-0 sometime in the next few months, and your advice will certainly be taken. Mark of Rio Grande Hobbies (4NScale) says the latest from Bachmann is mid-July - hopefully.

I used a 2004 on the tender, and haven't done the tender yet.

BTW, Mr Vlk,... I never did thank you for the smokebox I asked for a while back. ;) Thanks!
