Has anybody used the new Kadee "58" coupler? If so, how's it working. Also, would like some info. on switch machines. I'm just getting started, and I'm planning on using PECO swithces, however I've heard their machines, Turtle and Atlas aren't real good. Any suggestions?

The MR April 2001 review of the 58 may give you a little insight.

I have 2 sets of the 58s in use and haven't seen any real problems yet. I set them to the Kadee gauge just like the rest of my couplers.

I'm not familiar with 'Turtle'. I do use Tortoise machines under the table and have been very satisfied with the slow motion. I drive them with 9 volts DC and have found them to be very reliable.

The Tortoise switch machines are very reliable. More so than any of the twin coil type switch machines. For one thing, you won't burn them out like you can with a twin coil machine. They come with a 3 year warranty if you have a problem. I have about 40 of them installed and have never had a problem.

You might run into a problem using the Tortoise with Peco turnouts... unless you remove the nifty spring from under the turnout. You don't need it anyway if you use the Tortoise as they are positive thorowing (won't stop until the point is tight against the rail).

The sprung on the Peco will prevent the slow motion, and maybe even prevent the turnout from throwing, depending on how much tension there is.

I've been retro-fitting the front of my steam locos with the Kaydee #58 using the Kaydee track gauge to set the uncoupler height. Also using the Kaydee between the tracks uncoupler. Everything is operating as designed.

I wanted to answer this separately, like ncng I use the Tortoise machine exclusively and at 9V DC. I also use NCE Switchit stationary decoders to controll them. Smoothiest running, slow motion, I even hooked up an operating switch stand to my units and do they look good!
I've never heard of the 'turtle'switch machine, but if you're talking about the Tortoise, Very Easy to install. I use hot glue to set them in place. They work like a charm!!!!
