Yes, as I had stated, I like the SDP45's. I did not catch them until they had technically left the roster and were under VMV ownership. Here is a fine specimen: [IMG] . If I had not told you this was an ex-Conrail unit, you might not have believed me [IMG] I like the mismatched fan housings over the radiator.

Here is the only other SDP45 I have had the honor to photograph; imagine my surprise when I saw it on the other end of the Hamlet yard on the same day! [IMG]
It looks like someone stole the first radiator fan shroud! The painter did a little better job on this one too [IMG]

Whoa! Somebody is paying attention! You are right.... I was looking in the SD45-2 archives since at least one of the SDP45's was wrecked and rebuilt with an SD45-2 long hood!

    Good catch... my bad [IMG]

Does anybody know what happened to these big blue beasts?I know some were rebuilt into SD40-Ms for SP.What happened to the rest of them? Scrapped?

By the way you do know that these beasties are ex Erie Lacawana and are not really SDP45s.

    Catt,
I do not know what the ultimate disposition of these units was. I assume they could have been remanufactured, using the frame/trucks/and most components, but having the 3000 hp 16 cylinder and upgraded electricals added to make an SD40-3 (or whatever they are called, depending on who rebuilds them....whitness the UP Tunnel Motors!)
As far as them not being actual SDP45's, you might want to elaborate on that for everyone's benefit.

Well, like Catt mentioned, some of the former EL/CR SD45M's wound up as core units in the M-K SD40M-2 program for SP, after lease fleet careers with VMV. Six units to be exact, dispositions as follows:

    SP 8691: VMV 6685 - CR 6685 - EL 3654
    SP 8692: VMV 6699 - CR 6699 - EL 3668
    SP 8693: VMV 6697 - CR 6697 - EL 3666
    SP 8694: VMV 6696 - CR 6696 - EL 3665
    SP 8695: VMV 6693 - CR 6693 - EL 3662
    SP 8696: VMV 6690 - CR 6690 - EL 3659

Not sure what happened to the rest...I dunno if they've been scrapped or not, I haven't heard of any info on them. It's possible some are kicking around in a lease fleet or a backlot somewhere...somebody out there knows for sure. The only other units with this type of carbody, the SP SDP45's, were all scrapped a few years ago at M-K Boise, IIRC.

Harold,True SDP-45s have a passenger car heating system installed in the body extention and a squared off rear hood end.The EL units were bought strickly because of the huge fuel tank.(5,000 gal. capacity I believe).Hence they have the Ved hood end like the standard units.I think it was on the third order that EMD realized they were not true SDPs and called them SD-45ms.The whole reason EL bought them was to be able to run all the way to Chicago without having to stop to refuel enroute.

Check out the picture of the SD45-2 posted in this forum.... look at that massively oversized fuel tank. I believe the vent on the hood doors near the end of the loco were for the air compressor.

Harold ,that is an SD45-2. EMD altered the fuel tank which is shorter to reach a 5,000 gal.capacity.The air tanks were moved inside the long hood to acheive this, and the tank was built in their place to increase the capacityof the tank.
