I've seen a lot of CSX power in southeastern Wisconsin lately. I've seen CSX units using the UP line from Chicago to Superior, and yesterday I saw a couple CSX locos on a Wisconsin Central train. I love seeing CSX up here in Wisconsin, along with all of its leased power(FURX). Does anybody know why CSX is using Wisconsin rails?

My uneducated guess is that it boils down to one of two things:
    1) They have obtained some sort of trackage rights agreement
    2) They are paying off horsepower hours used in the past (everyone knows CSX owes quite a few folks, since they are "locomotively challenged") [IMG]

I think it's #2 becuase, like you said, CSX is locomotively challenged [IMG] I hear that they've borrowed from UP in past years, and are just paying them back with horsepower. Thanks very much!

and being locomotivly challenged has gotten worse with CSX booming on Ex-Conrail lines, and engines,CSX is so busy these days, that retirement has gone up a little because of the oldest engines are n't able to last much longer with out extinsive rebuilding. Did any one hear the rumor about CSX buying rebuilt SD40-2s [IMG] ??

Not buying, but leasing (and they're really SD40-3s, but who cares [IMG]). Currently 103 units on the property, rebuilt by Alsthom in Canada.
3000-3052 owned by First Union Bank, reporting marks FURX, green/silver paint.
3053-3102 owned by Alsthom, reporting marks GCFX. First 16 or so have FURX paint job, rest have a gray primer dip with nose stripes as FURX.

Reportedly First Union backed out on their order, and Alsthom is not happy they are left with 50 SD40-3s - They are looking for a buyer.

I must add to your comments, wt&c, that first all the C30-7As went, then 98 non "-2" GPs, now most of the B23-7s are going as well. Seems like CSX is setting up for an order along the lines of the one UP made (1000 units? I think not, 250 could be possible though), but they are retiring the units before the order, unlike UP, who is doing it as the slots get filled.

Until CSX goes out and buys some more power, they will have leased power running rampant on their rails.
