Snow covered and icy roads, 4 days straight of school cancelled, thousands without power, 8 inches of snow w/ an inch of ice in the middle....sounds like it's time to RAILFAN!!!! Cincinnati was right in the middle of the big snow & ice storm that swept through the midwest over the last few days. Here's a sampling of images from yesterday and today.... First up is NS8377, a single Dash 9 leading a short train southbound through Elmwood Place yesterday (1/29/09): CSX7900 Southbound waiting on a red signal at Wyoming, OH yesterday: And underway a few minutes later, still in Wyoming. I love these old B&O signals! And a couple minutes later NS9329 leads northbound stacks under the signal bridge at Wyoming:
The previous shots were taken during lunch break...then on the way home, headlight in the distance. I wasn't sure if there was enough light, so I went to ISO2000, and did a light check on some tank cars in Ivorydale Yard while I waited for the train to approach...looks like there's enough light, barely... Here it comes. This would be alot better shot if it wasn't for the lense flare at the bottom, tough shot looking into the bright lights. The headlights reflecting off of the ice in the trees: And here she is easing into the yard. Check out the sheet of ice on the road slug: Then some from today...the sun popped out oh so briefly for a tease. We don't see it much this time of year around these parts....CSX4586 kicks up the snow with a northbound man at Wyoming:
and as soon as the Northbound cleared, this southbound local appeared, and held on a signal. I didn't have time to see it get underway unfortunately.... Then after work I headed over to Northern Kentucky, first stop Ludlow Yard where this set was idling. The NS Ohio River bridge is in the background: Then over to Devou trestle. Again, fighting the sunset, barely enough light w/ a high ISO, a northbound grain train slugs upgrade: and it's rear end helper a few minutes later: Let it snow!!!
Wow, what a series! I like the headlights reflecting off oce in tree shot. Cool is an understatement!
nice shots NS 8377 is a C40-8W not a C40-9W the C40-9Ws go from 8889-on and the C40-8Ws are 8300s i think
You are right. I don't know NS numbering system well, but the fuel tank (and skinny rear wing) give it away. It's an ex-Conrail unit, right (NS didn't order any wide cab Dash 8's, correct)?
