    Hello everybody!

    1. CSX paint scheme
On pictures of CSX locos you can see 2 different paint schemes. A "grey/yellow/blue" one and a "blue and yellow" one. Where´s the difference between these two schemes? Yeah... the color... I know... :tb-biggrin: I can imagine, that one scheme is an older one, and the other one is a newer scheme.

    2. GP38-2
As far as I know, the GP38-2 exists in two versions. There are units which have the dynamic brakes and due to this a 3rd fan. And there are units without the dynamic brakes and therefore just have 2 fans.
Does the CSX have GP38-2s without the dynamic brakes in service? If not, did CSX ever have these units and when were they taken out of service?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Greetings from Germany
    Chris

PS: I appologize if there already exists a thread with this content, but I couldn´t find it.

Chris, The earlier one is known as YN2 or yellow nose 2. This is the light yellow, gray, and blue. In 1992, CSX switch to the current or YN3. This version has a darker blue and mustad yellow. It looks like the old B&O colors. YN1 was the stealth scheme that had yellow painted on the ends to make it more visible.

On the GP38, I dont know if they did have GP38 without dynamic brakes, but I have never seen one. I have gone throught countless pictures while researching for my GP38 project.

Thanks for your response. I like this YN2 scheme... what a pity, that it is replaced by the NY3 scheme. I know, that not all units are repainted at once, but nevertheless it´s fascinating, that there are still units in service (16 years after they startet repainting) which are painted in YN2.

The whole day I kept on searching for a CSX GP38-2 without dynamic brakes and in the end, I found this. If I´m not completely wrong, these are two GP38-2 units without dynamic brakes.
So, but there´s the next question: Exits anywhere the possibility to get information on a special unit? In this case it´s the "2558", as seen on the pic. I´d like to know if it is still in service and if its small fuel tank (as seen on the pic) was replaced by a larger one (mind the remarks to the pic).

I believe there were originally four GP38-2s on CSX without dynamic brakes. These four units were purchased by shortline Durham and Southern before it was merged into Seaboard Coast Line. Hope this helps.

See Fallen Flags at Durham & Southern to see the original configuration of Durham and Southern GP38-2s #2000-2003.

Chris, join Loconet.com. I ask all my rolling questions over there.

After looking at your pictures, I search for additional pictures. There is at least another one without dynamic brakes. Its CSX 2559. Also, CSX 2557 has been repainted into YN3, so I am sure its still in service. I also found a picture of CSX 2558 with small tanks in 2008, just follow the links.

CSX changed to YN3 (dark blue/flat gold) in 2002. It was YN2 (gray/blue/yellow) that they switched to in the early 90s. There are still YN1 units left. Until very recently, there were still Seaboard and C&O units.

Just found this page. It´s quite interessting, you can find a locomotive roster and a listing of all YN3 units on this page. But I´m not sure how reliable it is.

By the way, this page also mentions "early 2002" as introducing date of YN3 scheme.

Does anyone know, why "2558"´s roof is white on this picture? I thought, only YN3 units got a white roof.

Chris, its to reflect heat. The white color reflects the heat better then dark blue. FEC roof cabs are also painted white.

Makes sense, and I think all YN3 units have such a white roof, but I didn´t know, that YN2 units also got it. Because in the original YN2 scheme roof cabs are painted blue.

CSX paint schemes and white cab roofs

I would like to know whether all or most YN2 units got white roofs before the switch to YN3. A lot of archive photos are older and may no longer be accurate. I noticed the two GP38-2 units that run on the CSX Sarnia sub in Canada had YN2 paint with blue cab roofs for years, then a few years ago got white roofs with the YN2, then 2 or 3 years ago were repainted into the YN3 scheme with white roofs. Did any C44-9Ws in YN2 Bright Future ever get white roofs before they were repainted into the YN3 Dark Future scheme? BTW, the "Canadian" CSX GP38-2s have been modified into typical Canadian units with their nose headlights, above cab bells. The ditch lights still flash unlike CN or CP engines which remain steady on during a road crossing.

"canadian" CSX locomotives? When did this start happening? A lot of the CSX GP38-2's that have the headlights on the nose were built that way, especially the old Seaboard locomotives.
