Just saw on the news that a trainwrek had occurred (1400 Central Time) in Ohio. There were also BN/BNSF coalporter cars visibile on the video. One train derailed another train on an adjacent track. In short, two trains have jumped off the rails. There were some serious injuries as well but the details to such are not yet clear. It appears that the rail cars flew off the rails and crushed some autos at a grade crossing. Hopefully, no one will be too seriously infured once the dust settles. Make sure to keep all involved in your thoughts.
Fox new just reported that 3 were injured, 2 of them already released from the hospital. The 3rd man was hit by a large piece of steel. No reported deaths. Good news.
I believe you are confusing two different wrecks. I just heard on the news that the one the original poster was referring to located in Toledo. The one yesterday at CP 128 in Ashtabula was somewhat smaller. We got by there last night and saw about 4 or 5 cars on the ground pulled away from the track with no wheels. This one was not at a grade crossing (actually, it was under a road bridge), but 100 yards from the NS ore line diamond. Track 1 was out of commission until 11:30 pm. They were single tracked from CP 134 to past CP 124, where the wreck last week occured. 124's switches are still spiked and a few of 128's switches are out of commission.

If that is true, the engineer made a basic mistake that caused much more trouble that it would have been worth to just go ahead and hit the car. I would have. I know the crew on Q375, maybe I'll call them and see what happened.
This explains why we saw a dedicated CSX stack train moving eastbound as "NS 172" on the NS tracks yesterday about 12:30PM. Knew something had to be up. Today CSX traffic was stacking up all over the place here in Mentor. Heard about the derailment in New Baltimore on the AM radio about 2PM today.
The eastbounds in Mentor finally got going around 7-7:30 tonight. Caught a meet at Hopkins Rd, a medium speed eastbound and a fast westbound, both stacks & pigs. The EB was about halfway through when the WB showed up, the EB still was the last to clear the crossing! A few minutes later we saw a WB NS with UPs on the front. Anyways, this is getting a little off topic...
How would mentioning diverted rail traffic because of a derailment be off topic in a discussion about the derailment?
Well, I did start talking about unrelated trains running through Mentor on the Nickle Plate... And anywas, the topic was about the Toledo derailment on th B&O, not the one in Astabula on the NYC
I believe all the Willard Sub derailment reroutes were sent up to Toledo on CSX and then back down to Deshler or Fostoria, depending on the direction of travel. As for the cause of the derailment, the winner is... dragging equipment! Derailment probe cites loose chain
That's a lot of damage for a dragging chain. One would think the chain would have broke before causing this much damage.
I too thought the chain would break before it pulled a locked switch open. Then again the switch may not have been locked to begin with and it'd be very easy for a chain to do this. We'll have to see what the NTSB says about it.
This switch is equipped with an electric lock mechanism, as are all hand throw switches on this piece of railroad. It could have taken the entire assembly and yanked it off the ties, or there could have been just enough sheer force when the chain caught the handle to snap the catch mechanism.
