I'm trying to do a factory reset for an ESU decoder and I'm having no luck. I'll read the decoder and then write a value of 8 for CV08, which should be the corresponding value on ESU decoders. All the settings appear to be the same. Same loco address, light outputs, etc..

Has anyone run into this issue or know what I'm doing incorrectly?

How was the project written to the decoder? The LokProgrammer has a check box to make the values being written the default values. This is because the thousands of CVs need to correspond to the sound project. It is a common misconception that a decoder must revert to an address of 3 when reset.

It's a Gold Atlas and came pre-downloaded. Which check box are you referring to?

when you click the "Write Data" (the file icon with red arrow) or "write Sound data" icon (the music icon with arrow), a prompt box appears.

Gotcha. Should it not be checked? When I look at my function mapping for example it still hasn't changed.

First, I save the sound project file to a new file with a loco specific name. I check the box when first writing the sound project, the uncheck it for added setup and loco “tuning” (BEMF, speed curve, lighting, etc), then, when I get everything running nicely, read the decoder back into the loco specific project, save the file and write the data back with the box checked. This lets me, or a client, get the decoder back to “as installed and tuned”. And,of course, I may do incremental “default writes”, depending on where I am at in process, especially if it is getting complicated.

Unchecking during the setup/tuning phase allows me to get back to “square one” for that project, or an intermediate point, without having to reload the decoder. Useful when using DecoderPro while making changes (PoM, etc). One doesn’t want to go back to “factory default”, since that is meaningless with a sound project.
