It's assigned to Binghamton Terminal and perhaps used only in work train service of some sort, but I found it interesting that an almost 50 year old D&H caboose is still hanging around. It's got to be one of very few rolling stock that has both roofwalks and conspicuity stripes. (Anyone who has some of the recently released Atlas D&H (CP) GP38-2's might want to paint an Atlas extended vision cab to go with it.)

Cabooses are still in use in Alaska on work trains. Sorry, I haven't uploaded the pictures yet.

KCS has an operational caboose at its Gulfport, MS terminal. The caboose is used during the weekly 8-mile out and back trip through an Industrial Complex. The return half of that trip is a backing move and the caboose is required to provide whistle signals at all crossings. Occasionally the return involves just the loco and caboose, but the caboose still provides the signals.

I thought I had some photos, but they must have been one of the casualties of a lighting strike a year or so ago. I'll see if I can get some in the near future.

Darren, please feel free to use the image. If you prefer a bigger file to work from, just email or PM me. I took the photo on 12/27.

I guess that if roofwalks and ladders are available, the easiest procedure would be to get one of the Atlas D&H models and add the details. Does anyone know what that black square of louvers near the bottom right side is?

It has a 5-59 builder's date on it, so I'm hoping it's still in service come next May.

Since there's a stack right above the louvres,I'd guess it's an air intake for a furnace for heat?

There is at least one CSX caboose here in Cincinnati that I've seen in the very recent past (couple months ago).
