As another newbie to DCC on here I hope this question isn't too stupid. I am using a NCE Power Pro system. When I power up a Locomotive I get the real neat engine sounds. But how do I shut the engine down when I am finished running the loco? It seems to just sit there and idle. I can shut the sound off but I would like to shut the engine down. Any suggestions?

With DCC as long as the loco is on the track, its going to be live. The easiest way to remove the power to a locomotive is to use power routing turnouts. ( to put the loco in a siding ) Or to use a on/off switch to switch off a section of track. To do this you would need to cut gaps in one rail and wire the switch to that section of track....Mike

A lot of the DCC sound equiped locos (and I have several) have a way to shut down the loco and sound in a three step procedure. By double pressing the #9 button you will start the shutdowns first step. Double pressing #9 again enters the second step. Double pressing #9 a third time shuts the loco down completely. The last sound you will hear will be the engineer leaving the cab and closing the door. The loco will be shut down completely and will not respond to commands from the controller. When you want to bring the loco back to life double press the #6 button one time. and sounds and control will be restored.

This decoder setting may be of interest. Be sure and consult your particular decoder manual first.

CV 113 Quiet Mode Timeout Period
When the Quiet Mode Timeout Period is set to a non-zero value, sounds become active only when the decoder is addressed. When the locomotive has been stopped and all functions have been turned off, the sound effects will turn off automatically after the timeout period has elapsed as set by CV 113.

with soundtraxx tsunami's, pressing the emergency stop button will shut down the engine, and then advancing the throttle up will cause it to start back up again.

One thing not mentioned is the mute feature. By pressing button #8 once you will mute the sound. Pressing #8 again will turn the sound back on. You will still be able to run the loco with the sound muted. Dispatch the loco and it will not run until you select it again. Before you dispatch the loco, make sure the lights are off ,button #0 and the sound muted and the loco can sit on powered track with minimal current draw.
