Howdy all. The ? I had was ,, can you run decoder equipped locos on a analog system.

There is a local club that has invited me to run some N scale trains, and my fleet is decoder equipped. SO i was just wondering if I will mess the decoders up with analog.

    Wyatt:

You can run your DCC equipped loco's on a DC system if you have CV 29 set to run on DC and DCC. This is the default value for this part of CV 29.

The other option is to have the loco run on DCC only. Many folks change the default value of DCC and DC to DCC only if they experienced runaways when the loco is set to run on DCC and DC.

Sometimes this happens when the default option is left in place.

I've never changed the default value on any of my loco's and they'll run on DCC as well as DC.

    Hope his helps. ;)

    Have fun..... [IMG]

I have a couple of locos that run very poorly on DC with a Digitrax decoder but run great on DCC. This could be a digitrax issue since I have a couple locos equiped with no frills Lenz decoders and they operate fine between DC and DCC.

    Matt:

I've never had any trouble with my DCC loco's runningon an analog system. Most of the decoders in my loco's are Lenz decoders. The loco's that use a plugN'play decoder have Digitrax decoders installed.

Maybe just something with the config then.....I will have to look into this a little more.

A DCC equipped Loco will require a few more volts to get moving on a DC system, compared to a similar but DC equipped loco. The decoder needs a few volts to power up and realise it's only DC and so should start moving...

Similarly, the top-end speed of the loco may be reduced a little because of the decoder.

But neither of these should be "big" changes in behaviour. Just a later start and maybe a slightly reduced top-end.
