Hello. I am putting in a Soundtraxx decoder in a Bachman 2-8-0 Consolidation. All of the engines I have put decoders in have a mark to identify pin #8 (for the red wire pin). The Bachman has no marking that I see (OBVIOUS, that is). I want to plug the decoder in the first time at the right male/female pin orientation.

I don't want to fry anything "searching" for Pin 8.

Anyone out there know of a sure-fire way to ID the pin orientation?

The pins are: orange = 1 red = 8, therefore look at the socket in the engine for the orange wire. However, to the best of my knowledge the wiring is layed out so no harm is done if you plug it in wrong. You can only plug it in two ways... the right way and the wrong way.
Should you plug it in wrong it simply will not work. But no harm is done to the decoder.

Thanks Caelis. I wasn't sure regarding the potential harm to the decoder. What I wound up doing was pluggning in an old decoder I had into the pin set. It worked, so I was able to mark the Red #8 connection.

I got the Soundtraxx unit and speaker in and have it running now. It is LOUD! I love it.
