Details on NS derailment in Akron, AL

At approximately 1:50pm (CDT) on Tueday, 06/28, a Norfolk Southern (non-intermodal) freight train derailed 23 cars and 3 locomotives at Akron, AL (between Meridian, MS and Tuscaloosa, AL) after striking a downed tree. There were no injuries to the train crew. Preliminary reports have estimated that the clean-up will take at least 24 hours.

NS is currently arranging to detour several trains around the derailment site, but East-bound Intermodal trains 226-28 (LA to Atlanta) and 220-28 (Dallas to Atlanta) are holding West of Meridian and will be delayed at least 24 hours (including all connections traffic destined beyond Atlanta). TR 22G-28 (UP connection traffic to Birmingham/Atlanta) is blocked by the derailment and will move after the site clears. TR 22Q-28 (Atlanta to Birmingham/New Orleans) will operate to Birmingham and hold for approximately 24 hours.

West-bound train 219-29 (Atlanta to Dallas) will detour over New Orleans, and 225-29 (Atlanta to LA) will detour over Memphis.

Customers should expect their freight on these trains to be delayed 24/36 hours. At this time, no other train detours are planned.

This derailment will affect all traffic moving between Dallas & the Southeast, including some traffic from the west coast. Traffic moving between Laredo & Mexico & the southeast, PA & NJ will also be affected.

I don't have a clue, Harold. A friend found the report on an internal KCS site and sent it to me. The train may have originated with KCS, which NS picked up at Meridian, MS and was hauling on to Atlanta...dunno?
