Derailment in El Centro

EL CENTRO, Calif. (AP) - A Union Pacific train carrying fertilizer and sulfuric acid derailed , spilling 100 gallons of the toxic chemical.

The derailment happened just before midnight Wednesday north of El Centro.

Eight cars derailed, with four landing on their sides, according to a spokesman for Union Pacific.

Four of the cars were empty, three contained fertilizer and one contained sulfuric acid.

The sulfuric acid leak was not discovered until nearly two hours after the derailment.

No one was injured, and there were no evacuations in the area, according to El Centro fire officials.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation, Union Pacific said.

The train travels in the Imperial Valley between the U.S.-Mexico border and Niland, a Union Pacific spokesman said.
