ALCo PA-1 / PA-4 Engine#0783 NYNHH Sorry, I don't have a photo of this engine so far on the DHVM website but wanted to note that this engine was part of the roster; but, never used operationally. Built 1949 and received by the D&H in 1968. It was used for "Spare Parts" to keep the other four (4) engines running. It was scrapped in 1972. If anyone has any photos of this engine I would like to be able to host those images on the DHVM.
So, where are they now... #16 recently returned from Mexico and was last reported to be in Albany, OR Photograph taken October 2003 by John Eilers DHVM: The Return of the PA Engine #16
When, and how, did 16 get trucks installed? Are you sure that's 16? Last I knew it was still "truckless" on a flatcar. Could that be 18? I'm not sure when Doyle installed the trucks--hmm, I have shots on video of 18 on the turntable at Brooklyn in 2002. Anyway, the original question remains.
Yes, that is #16 up on trucks and here is a bit more recent photo. Photograph taken May 30, 2005 at Lebanon, OR by Nathan Wallin Owner (Mike Root) of the Albany & Eastern Railway
Any idea how that happened? I'm surprised that she looks so good. Some of the photos of the trip up from Mejico looked like all the structure to support the side sheets was all bent and wrecked. Maybe on the other side?
I'm not sure what happened exactly. When Dolye brought #16 & #18 back from Mexico, #16's shell was to be restored and sent to the Smithsonian Institute display back in SF colors; it's original paint. I do know that flatcar ATSF#94604 that #16 was on had to be returned to service so #16 had to be moved. From what Nathan told me when he sent the photos to be included on the DHVM that it has a new owner and was moved and hence got it's trucks so it could be pulled. Since he took the photo Mike Root had to move it again to avoid "taggers", etc. from causing any more damage to the unit. I don't know what the plans are now for the unit but I hope to see it restored in some manner. If I had the $$$ and skills of Doyle I would bring #16 to a museum here in D&H colors where the PA Story could be told and displayed.
