Hello All, The March/April issue of N-scale magazine has once again fueled(pun intended)my desire to build a large locomotive facility to occupy my overabundance of motive power. This issue features an article by Pete Thomas & Walt Huston on BN's diesel inspection facility in Vancouver Washington. It mentions a multi-part article published in Mainline Modeler Feb-May 1983 as a resource. Does anyone have these issues and could scan them for me? This article also say's that Mr Hundman built a HO diorama of an engine facility, does anyone know where to obtain photos of his project? I also would be very interested in hearing from others who wish, might,or have built such a facility. I have acquired an additional 30"x 8' to build this project and would enjoy hearing your ideas on how best to bring this project to life. Thank You for your time! Rock On Danimal
I'm planning on building the facility at CSX's Selkirk yard (along with the yard). Here are some pictures of the facility. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=2974&Y=23563&Z=18&W=2 http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - Go inside and check out the "Engine Facilites" section. This should be fun when I start! ------------------ Corey Lynch VP - Rensselaer Model RR Society NEB&W RR
Harron, If you get pics of that would you mind sending a copy to me at BCRKIng@hotmail.com? I have heard alot about that yard, and yet only seen one pic ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@hotmail.com
BCR, my website at present is entirely dedicated to CSX's Selkirk Yard. I kinda have too many pics to send, so just click on the link. The Terraserver shot is cool too. ------------------ Corey Lynch VP - Rensselaer Model RR Society NEB&W RR
Here are a couple more links that may help anyone considering a similar undertaking. http://www.uprr.com/uprr/ffh/history/hinkle/ http://www.uprr.com/uprr/ffh/history/jenks/shopcom.shtml
The locomotive servicing facility is not yet done on my layout, but it will not be quite as large as Hinkle ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com
I was told by someone in the know, that those of us who enjoyed this article in N-Scale will really find part 2 useful! I can't wait, maybe my diesel facility really is going to become a reality!
Only if there is a contract. Ussually GE. Example-BC Rail GE warranty work sometimes takes place at the Southern RR of BC Shop. Happy Railroading! Dane N. ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@hotmail.com
I see what you mean, Danimal. I have just received my copy of N Scale magazine you mention (the first of my subscription). The article may change my plans for the locomotive servicing area on my layout, as this area is not yet built. I must start measuring ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com [This message has been edited by Alan (edited 12 May 2000).]
Generally, you will find servicing of foreign power is done under loco pooling arrangements between various roads. On-the road repairs are also done up to a point. That is dictated by the pooling terms and will cover easy to repair and replace items like brakeshoes and wheel turning, et al. Major repairs will be done in the locos home shops and hauled dead-in-tow to home rails, unless a contractor is used. Dane's comment regarding BCRail's GE's being worked on in Southern RR of BC's shops is possibly due to lack of space in BCRail's shops and necessary upgrade/warranty work needing done. They were upgrasding the Dash 8-40's to Dash 9-44 specs with split radiators and injection/manifold changes. Gary.
The reason is, dun dun dun, Because GE does so much stuff there that it is easier, and BC Rail doesn't mind, ussually Happy Railroading! Dane N. ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@hotmail.com
How so, Dane? What makes it easier to use an off-road workshop rather than a home shop? I'm interested in the reasons the work is being done in SR's shops, that's all. And I know how far BC is from Erie Gary.
BC RAIL SHOPS ARE FULL AND, GE HAS NO PEOPLE LIVING IN PRINCE GEORGE, MAYBE ONE IN SQUAMISH, BUT THATS NOT ENOUGH! WHO WANTS TO LIVE IN SQUAMISH? Also, BCR has more a rebuilding type facility now that they rebuilt the back shop, as apposed to the general maint. shop of the SRY. It sound wierd, but it is Happy Railroading! Just got my May/June n-scale and I've gotta say that part2 is all that was promised. IMHO this facility is a work of art! I can't wait to see this entire complex. Anyone thinking about building something similar will surely get some good ideas from this article!
Thanks, Dan. I will look out for the postman. Hope they don't send my copy by boat!! ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
I Am designing my layout, and have made room for a small but effient locomotive repair center with 2 traks, using spectrum building, and 4 storae tracks ------------------ Cya own the line! The one and ONLY Dash!!
