I've just gotten to a point in the building of my layout that I want to build a diesel service/repair/yard area. Anyone know where I can get some ideas on the prototype design? Such as what type of buildings, where they fit into the scheme, etc etc. I've got a space thats 18"x24' to work with.
    Thanks
    Robert

Union Pacific has a great site on their Hinkle Facility.

    Here is an exterior shot:

And here is the link to the track schematic.

There is a great page on the
    Jenks Shop as well.

What great prototypes to model! The yard on a curve to fit around our walls with the engine service on the inside of the corner where we want it so we can show off our engines.

And the shed with the lower half of the walls open. Great for models as well.

    Thanks for those photos.

Well the other guys have posted some great photos of locomotive servicing faculties. My model railroad is freelance, so I can model a lot of things that maybe did not happen to be there all at the same time. On my Norfolk Southern I have a round house with steam locomotive shops and Diesel shops at the other end. Here are a few shots of my Roanoke Shops ( Freelance ). I'd like to see what some of the other members have modeled! Lets compare our locomotive
    shops. [IMG] [IMG]

I hope this is of help to you. I'm looking forward to see what other users have done.
