Hungarian visitor to my Slovenian diorama basks in the sun. MAV V63 electric was a cross-border visitor on my previous Slovenian layout.

This has me wondering. I don't recall anyone ever discussing it, but there must have been a large number of engine and locomotive builders across Europe. I know that some were built "in house" so to speak. How many were railroad construction? How many from private manufacturers? Imports and exports from nation to nation. War survivors, etc. Must be quite a lengthy story?

And honestly, a lot from the former Soviet bloc would have been state industries. On a sided note, the variety in the picture is kind of reminiscent of scenes from older US railroading with the variety of paint schemes.

The paint schemes in the picture are actually current, although the green and yellow 362 Bo-Bo-Bo's were sadly retired in the last couple of years. At the back is one of the mainstay Siemens Taurus fleet on SZ, the "Gomulka" EMU's are still running in small numbers, they have lots of seating and ideal for commuter runs. The MAV Electrics do not actually cross the border into Slovenia due to different voltages, except for a short distance in the border station at Hodos. One of my favourite Hungarian locomotives, which is why I could not resist buying a model!
