Here is a relivitly simple question, or so I think! Does rail wear down??? I was running on a layout that has had the same track for almost 45 years, and thought that the rail didn't look quite right, I mean I could have just been off that night, but I don't think so. Also, the line is frequented by a bright boy (once every 2 months), the 5 lbs. box car (when a new engineer comes on the system), and a track cleaning car (once a week on the main). It would strike me as something that would happen, but is it a big problem??? [IMG]

    Thanks!

    Happy Railroading!!

The best way to find out if you have a problem is to put an NMRA track gauge on it, if it flows through, as we say in the east... fagettabboutit....

If not well... you know what to do [IMG]

    Yes.

Dane, if the track has been down for 45 years and cleaned with an abrasive block frequently, it obviously isn't a BIG problem.
A more frequent problem is the wearing down of the wheels that run on this track time after time.

Being practical, look at the curves and turnouts for signs of wear. If there is wear there you should be getting an increasing amount of derails. I have track that has been down 20 years with no problem.
