Externally, virtually nothing. A slight difference in the headlight housing. Internally, E8 had the 567B engines. E9 had the 567C. 2250 versus 2400 total horsepower.

I seem to recall that one had a curved headlight lens and the other had a flat headlight lens--I've forgotten which was
    which. Otherwise (externally) identical.

I don't believe any of the E units were ever painted in the Black Widow scheme. I think one was painted in what was called the "Holloween" scheme for a short time but most went from Daylight to Bloody Nose. The F units on the other hand were never in Daylight and in BW before they started painting the Bloody Nose scheme.

Hi I know that this doesn't really matter, but, in the case of the the BN E units that were rebuilt in 1973. There were two batches 9900-9908, and 9910-9925. The first set were E-8s and the second batch were E-9s. During the rebuilding at Boise ID, the E-8s were upgraded to E-9 Specs. So check to see if they were rebuilt or not on the SP, that could make a difference. :D

OK I must have been thinking of the PAs, althought Con Cor did release some of those in BW
E-9 #6050 was painted in Black Widow for a short time.
The Halloween scheme was kind of like the bloody nose except it was black with an orange nose.
