Does anyone have a detailed history for Monon RR predecessors? There does not seem to be any site on the web, that has decent detail. I would like to know when the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago RY was reorganized, or otherwise was renamed the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville RY. Both of these companies carried the nickname "Monon." Long before the actual Monon RR emerged. Anyone? Boxcab E50
Have you tried the Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society, or more specifically, History of the Monon? - Nathan
Nathan- Thanks for the response. Yes. I have been to those sites. Could not find the information I was seeking. Was quite surprised there was not a corporate date history outline. If you happen to spot specific dates for the L, NA&C RY, (not the more recent LNA&C short line), I'd like to know. From the few hints I can put together. The Louisville, New Albany & Chicago became the CI&L some time in the 1890's. Boxcab E50
Good deduction. I checked with their listserv, and this was the response I received from the society president, Frank VanBree: It was renamed in the reorganization of 1897. March 31st if I remember correctly.
Nathan- Could I ask a favor? Would it be possible for you to confirm with that fellow, the March 31 date? 1897 sure fits. During the 1895-1897 period, there were many companies coming through re-organization. Due to the panic of 1893. The Northern Pacific RY was one of many coming into mind. Am thinking this change to CI&L was the same reason. Many thanks for the help!!!!! Boxcab E50
There was a further follow up from another member of the list confirming the time frame. They recalled reading "the name change came in the wake of the Breyfogle-induced receivership of the 1890's". You're welcome on what I've been able to find. I'm just acting as a conduit at this point! From what I've read on the listserv, the MRHTS is a pretty good bunch of people filled with a wealth of knowledge. - Nathan
