    Hi All,
I've seen where people have remotored locos with "coreless" motors and it's got me wondering.
How does a coreless differ from and open frame or a can motor?

Without getting into the details of construction, because a coreless motor has windings with no iron core, it has low inductance. Simply put, low inductance means that it cannot readily limit the flow of current caused by pulsed voltage applied. The result is that it will heat up and may burn out if used with pulsed DC power packs or with DCC (which uses pulses of varying width to regulate speed). I am also told that pulse power (or DCC) can weaken the magnets over time, even if the windings don't burn out.
