I need some good advice, and what better place to get it than right here:

    So here is my question:

I would like to elevate my tracks on my city layout leading into the main terminal. Now because this is a city layout, I'm planning to have numerous roads travelling under the trackage towards the large city buildings, and backdrop (much like the 'City Edge' layout).

I have numerous 4" and 3" Woodland Scenics foam sheets (not the risers - the actual 12x24" sheets). Rather than use full sheets for the subroadbed elevation, would it be prudent to take a 4" sheet, cut it into blocks and use the foam block to elevate 3/4" plywood (thereby leaving a lot of open space for those roads between the table-top and trackage), or would the foam be unreliable to use as a riser under the plywood. The elevated plywood would need to be approximately 20" wide in order to accomodate all of the yard trackage leading into the station.

My thinking on this is that I could use one 4" foam sheet to create a few risers for the plywood, thereby saving some money on the sheets, as well as leaving a lot of open space below the plywood (rather than a full block of 4" foam.

Is this the way to go (using the foam sheets that I have), or am I better to build wood risers for a wood subroadbed?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

IMHO, twenty inch wide plywood needs to be supported all along its length and possibly in the center if it is less than 3/4 inches thick. That is just a guess based on seeing prior warping of layout tables.
