Does anybody know where a photo of this unit can be found? It's the SD60 demonstrator that was leased to BN and rode on HTCR trucks. The only 'pic' i can find is this one of the Overland model- http://www.modeltrains.com/brass-omi/images/omi-6810.jpg

Does the Withers Publishing book 'SD60' have any information?

I have a B&W pic in the Withers SD60 book I can scan for you.
EMD 1-4 were test/demo units built mid-84. 1,2 & 4 were tested on at least 10 RR's prior to full production commencing, with 3 kept in reserve. 1,2,4 were later sold to Conrail, to become 6840-42 (not in order), but 3 was kept as a lease unit and fitted with the HTCR 'radial' trucks in Nov 1990.
There is no mention of where it had been leased but the info does state it was still in the EMD Demo Blue scheme and riding on the radial trucks as of mid-96.

    Hope this is of help.

    Gary.

I might make it into Caboose Hobbies tomorrow and i'll take a look at the book if i do. If you can scan it that would be great if it's not too much trouble.

I knew it was still in Demonstrator paint but wasn't sure when it got the HTCR trucks. The way i found out about it was when i was checking out the P2K SD60s i mentioned to another guy(who happened to be an ex UP now BNSF engineer Tom ????) that it was too bad they didn't make one of their demonstrator models #3 instead of 1 or 4 because than I could run it as a BNSF unit. He replied "Yes too bad, they still have #3. But what about the radial trucks?" To which i replied "What?"

He then went on to tell me how one day he was climbing off the unit which was running lead and happened to look back and noticed it had the HTCR trucks... Pretty interesting story and makes for some railroad lore- the EMD #3, the SD60 with radials! [IMG]

Sure thing! I'll get it scanned later tonight or in the morning and email it over.
I didn't realise they had a demo set of SD60's. More 'press' was given to the 3 BN SD's and the GP59/60 demo set. You learn something mnew everyday! [IMG]

A defininte one-off. I have an article somewhere on the design philosophy of the radial trucks. May ahve to dig that one out.
As for the model, you should be able to substitute the truck sideframes for an aftermarket set from the likes of Railpower, DA, DW, etc. (maybe the Athearn Genesis sideframes if they exist?) to represent EMD3.

I have 2 pictures of the said unit going through Bridgeport Neb. on the 23rd of june
this year. It has the same trucks that are found on the 70 macs. Can send you a scan of
these if you like. Proto 2000 will be releasing Demos 2&3 on the next run

Thanks for the info guys. Looking at some photos of the Oakway SD60s i have on the hard drive it looks like i do have a partial shot of EMD 3 but it's not very good. You can tell it's riding on different trucks though. It has ditch lites now, but no class lights or winterization hatch...

Due to the truck design i don't think the DA sideframe set will work as it's designed for the Athearn type truck, but i think the Genesis sideframes might work, but i'm not sure how close the mountings are. Oh yes, they do exist! [IMG] I think a good photo would be needed to compare the sideframes if they are the same as the 70 series or if they are the same as the 60MACs which i'm assuming. The 2 are a little different; it appears the struts were reversed on the 70 series on. Not too much difference though. Gats, maybe that article will come in handy!

    ***Forgot to mention***
I'm pretty sure that P2K is releasing the maroon demonstrator units 8301 and 8302, which i haven't seen either! [IMG]

I think the article will come in handy for you. The Withers book had diagrams in back of most phases of the 60/60M plus one for the 60MAC's. I can scan the trucks from each for your comparison, and then you could work from them to check the 60MAC and 70MAC trucks.

I saw the EMD 3 Eastbound through Fargo, ND about a week ago. I believe it is a semi-permanent stand in for an Oakway that was wrecked. It is easy to spot amongst its brethren, as it has more white that extends upward towards the cab on the long hood, while the Oakways have a constant-width white stripe on the long hood.

The demonstrators wear the 'demonstrator' paint while the Oakways wear a slightly different scheme... The underframe isn't blue either.
