Well I know that the E5's were made specifically for the Q for their Zephyr Service. 9911A Is the last surviving one I'm told. But 9911A had a mate, Silver Pilot had 9911B Silver Mate. But I cannot find any photos of 9911B. Does anyone here have one? Having volunteered at Illinois Railway Museum and having ridden in 9911A I would love to see her former booster unit in photograph.
I Think there is a photo in the "Diesel Spotters Guide" by Kalmbach. I'll have to check it out. Kalmbach also printed a book on EMD power "Our GM Scrapbook" that has a section on E units and there might be a photo there too.
Oh awesome, I'll go check those books out. Thanks for the help. Got a solid lead finally. It seems I keep finding every other E5 set but this one in photos.
Page 30 of "Our GM Scrapbook" has a photo of a A-B set of E5's. Silver Comet and Silver Meteor are teh names on the two.
There is a photo of Silver Pilot and Silver Mate on page 151 of the Mile Post 206 Edition of the Burlington in Transition by Corbin and Hardy.
There is an Otto Perry photo of 9911 A and B coming into Chicago Union Station on July 25, 1940 pulling the Exposition Flyer. The B units at that time were usually always mated to their same number A. http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00004769+OP-4769 Full Record
It seems there is a "time out" on the links to the "Full Record" of each of the photos I referenced above. After an hour or so they don't work anymore. You can still get to them from each photo by copying the call number, clicking on search and pasting it in the window that pops up.
