I know it's a couple months til the East Coast Large Scale Show, but if I was able to send you some cash, would you be able to pick up my frisco show car for me? I'm scrounging around hoping I can, but even if I can't I thought I'd ask first.

EMD Trainman to close video thread

On or about January 31,2009 I will be closing my EMD Trainmans video section due to lack of interest. It takes alot of time to plan and make a video, then even more time and effort to put it on you tube. The last time I checked, the G scale video that had the most reviews was only at 77 and I made these videos also available to all public. The one video that I made which captured alot of interest was at the count of 1,270 that last I saw it was my video of my Lionel Polar Express in O scale that I made. Although O scale may have more followers indeed, I just don't see the need to keep pursuing in make G scale videos which would allow me to concentrate on other things. I will still be keeping my EMD Trainmans G scale section while also the news and reviews section.

Thanx for all of your support EMD Trainman

Aristocraft updates old stock car: reviewed here

Aristocraft has been making the same old stock car for years. I really had no interest in the past buying one because they used a unrealistic paint scheme for the Rio Grande road name and had stock numbers for road numbers. Look out because now Aristocraft updated the stock car this year for the better. When I opened the box and looked at my new Rio Grande stock car I was really impressed how well aristocraft did updating the old design stock car. The car features a new see thru walkway on the roof, actual realistic road numbers, more realistic paint scheme for the Rio Grande road name, actual nice looking simulated wood flooring. I think Aristocraft did a real nice job turning the stock car into a more realistic piece of rolling stock and I'm glad I bought it.

The only thing I wish Aristocraft did was to put suffix numbers such as a, b,c etc each time they update a product so we know when we go to the store and want to pick something out, but don't want something that was made before a certain time period.

    Pitctured: New updated stock car

    Reviewed: Aristocraft 20ft rolling stock

Todays review is on the Aristocraft 20ft rolling stock. When I decided to pass the torch down to my little one and start out in the G scale hobby, we decided on the Aristocraft 20ft rolling stock. There were a couple of advantages to this, first the sapce factor. Having 20ft rolling stock allows for more train cars on the track which is perfect in a small area. Next my little one loves knuckle couplers and yes, knows what they are, so this left out the 2 axle LGB items which use hook and loop couplers. I must say I'm pretty happy with how well the Aristocraft 20ft cars loo, the graphics are crips and clear. These trains are definately not toy looking like those "New Bright" battery powered trains, they look just as good as the regular Aristocraft G scale rolling stock. The doors on the box car actually open and close. They are very well built, even better than some doors on the USA double door box car I dare say since how they are constantly opened and closed. The flat bed and gondolla car are also great, those get used the most since they are more accessible to put things in and out. The tank cars are real neat also, if the top opened I'm sure the little one would try to fill it up with juice. There are many road names to choose from much to my surprise.

The 20ft Aristocraft rolling satock comes thru standard with knuckle couplers and plastic wheels. These are perfect trains I must say to get your kids started in the hobby and they are very reasonable in price. The only downfall I see is if you wanted to convert these to metal wheels it's a little tough to do so because the way the side frames are built to hold the 2 axles.

I would also note that if you have spare Aristo Track Cleaning pads you can fit them onto the 20' cars and increase your track cleaning power too.

LGB Ebay sales still high despite announced come back

I'm a person who regularly visits ebay, especially when I'm looking for rare pices. I noticed that even after Christmas there is still an average of 1,500 to 1,700 LGB listings in the G scale section of Ebay despite the fact announcements of Marklin bringing LGB. Aristocraft and USA Trains only average around 200 to 300 listings in comparison. I also noticed the more expensive Piko and Pola buildings by LGB are not selling which is no surprise here. In my own search for buildings has even forced me to look into building my own also.

On another note, the Toy Fair is this February in Germany, so we will see what announcement Marklin has to make at that point in time.

Large Scale train show closes down 2 shows

Large Scale Train shows have been pretty popular in the past years, for those who didn't know Aristocraft was a major sponsor for all of them. I found out a month ago Aristocraft pulled sponsership on 2 shows, now both shows have been cancelled by Large Scale Train shows. They are the South East Large Scale Train Show and the Mid West Large Scale Train show, both of these shows are cancelled. The good news however it looks like they are adding another schedule for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show. There is already one scheduled for March 27, 28 2009. It looks like they are going to open yet another in the fall on September 25,26 2009. It is still too early to see if the West Coast Large Scale Train Show will also go on. It was moved from California to Las Vegas last year for 2008. There is no listing as of yet for this show, but still way to early for that.

Piko's new starter set gets bad reviews.

Piko has a new starter train set out now and has recieved bad reviews from Garden Railways magazine. This is mainly due to the locomotive that was built for the set. The editor notes there was paint on the locomotive wheels and did not conduct electricty well, although the locomotive has slider plates for pick up, paint on the driver wheels further reduce electrical pick up. Also crank pins on the drivers can work loose during normal operation, droping the valve gear and causing a derailment. It was quoted as a locomotive with too many weaknesses and could deter new comers in the hobby from either buying a set or having problems with their first experience in G scale.

    Fallout continues at Märklin
    Published: Thursday, February 26, 2009
    [IMG]

Two Märklin employees have been fired in the wake of the company's insolvency and owner Kingsbridge Capital is refuting allegations it's being investigated by a public prosecutor regarding its role in the company's financial demise.

According to the German business daily Handelsblatt, insolvency trustee Michael Pluta confirmed Karlheinz Menrad, the head of Märklin's Hungarian subsidiary, has been dismissed. Reportedly, Menrad had transferred more than $127,000 to Adler Toy, a holding company owned by the Hardt Group - connected to Kingsbridge - just prior to the declaration of insolvency. Menrad is a managing director of Adler Toy.

Only the German portion of Märklin has declared insolvency.

Also dismissed was Hans Reyher, the company's head of bookkeeping at the Goeppingen, Germany headquarters. Both men were longtime employees.

The firings come amidst reports in the German media of an investigation into the fees paid by Märklin to consultants since Kingsbridge bought it in 1996. According to reports, Pluta said the company might not be insolvent if it hadn't paid the approximately $50.1 million in fees. Kingsbridge has refuted Pluta's claim and might pursue legal action against the administrator.

Authorities in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, where Goeppingen is located, are also reportedly looking into allegations that Kingsbridge and Goldman Sachs lied about the financial situation of Märklin to get bank financing and that "hush money" was paid to some employees.

One direct effect of the insolvency has been the cutting back of the number of starter sets offered by Märklin GmbH. Dealers were notified in late February the previous list had undergone "a critical analysis" and that 13 sets had been cut, along with one new item.

business, continuing to produce and deliver product, and provide spare parts, repair,

LSOL owner writes his own story about Marklin

The owner of LSOL has written his on story about Marklin in Feb 3 2009, here it is.

    Maerklin faces bankruptcy

The train model manufacturer with a long tradition, Maerklin, faces again insolvency. The company is supposed to have more than 50 Million Euro ($65 million) debt.

A few years back, Maerklin already once faced the end. Then the company was saved by the Britisch Investor Kingsbridge Capital. Now insolvency is threatening again. The company is supposed to be just with Landesbank Baden Wuertenberg (LBBW) in debt for $50 Million, which was reported by the “Wirtschaftswoche” (Economy weekly – newspaper) on Monday based on Information from inside the company (Maerklin). The credit lines terminated on January 31st. and have not been renewed. The banks don’t see any possibility to further restructure the company.

Last year alone Maerklin – a 150 year old traditional company – is supposed to have lost 20 Million Euro. In addition the Kreispaarkasse Goeppingen (bank) didn’t extend the credit line. LBBW refused to comment on the story and neither Maerklin nor the Kreisspaarkasse could be reached for comments.

Maerklin belongs since 2006 to Kingsbridge Capital. Last year there were already sales (takeover) rumors due to the bad business numbers.

Kingsbridge is being investigated for a multitude of charges including fraud and Bankruptcy scam. They deny it but people I've talked to in Germany say otherwise. It is believed Kingsbridge filed for bankruptcy in Marklin's name simply so they could gain "hush" money or something. All I know is they are pulling an Enron. Marklin's Bookkeeper was fired probobly because they felt him a liability if he opened his mouth on Kingsbridge payroll and if fired the courts would believe he was just a disgruntled employee.

So many scenarios that could be the truth, but until the German State Officials finish their investigation, we will never know the truth. I'm currently taking a class in college for my networking administration called "Business Technology" and the Marklin News has been the focus. Part of a lecture on what not to do. Been very interesting.

They all get loaded up on a train to get sent further into Germany to a German POW camp, only they take over the train. They sucessfully fool the Germans along the way to Switzerland for freedom. I give this movie 5 stars.

    2) Emperor of the North filmed in 1973 and features Ernerst Borgnine is about the depression era of America and hobos hopping trains was common except for train #19 where Ernest Borgnin plays the role of a conductor who pushes off every hobo who jumps on his train which causes them to get run over and killed until he meets his match from a hobo called A-No1. This movie has been re-released in limited numbers, so get yours now. I give this one 4 stars.

    3) The Train filmed in 1964 which is black and white and features Burt Lancaster is about German occupied Frande during world war 2. France is near liberation, but there is one German high ranking officer who doesn't want to leave without his favorite French paintings from a museum that he over sees. He orders a train just to transport these precious paintings and the French people have to try and stop the train without blowing it up. I give this a 5 star rating.

    4) Run Away Train made in 1985 featuring Jon Voighht and Eric Roberts is about 2 prisoners in a Alasakan jail who escape and find a train to hide on. The engineer moves the train ahead then dies of a heart attack which forces the train to go full speed ahead and now the prisoners have to find a way to stop it for it crashes. I give this movie a 3 star rating due the the ending which I though was dumb.

    5) Money Train made in 1995 featuring Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrison and Jenifer Lopez is about a subway type train that goes and collects the money from all of the subway stations which they have to gaurd. Woody Harison who plays the loser type wants to rob the train after losing his job as a cop. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrison play the role as adopted brothers also, so Wesley has to keep Woody from robbing the train or at least from getting caught. I give this movie 5 stars.

    5) The Polar Express made in 2005 is a 3D cartoon type movie featuring Tom Hanks voice in some characters is based on the novel "The Polar Express" and is about a kid who looses faith in Santa Claus but then there is this magical train that shows up on his doorstep to take him to the North Pole. There is plenty of adventure on the way there. I found this movie adult entertaining as well as for the kids so I give it a 5 star rating, especially for the crisp type of 3d catoon images used.

    6) Silver Streak made in 1976 features Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. This one is about how Gene Wilder gets caught up in a conspiracy between a professor who can prove a big collectors art work is fake, but the big collector has the professor killed and only Gene knows about the fale professor and gets thrown off of the train. Richard Pryor who plays a criminal helps Gen to get back to the train and save his new found girlfriend, only the collector fights back with fire power with the cops and orders the engineer full foward with the train. The collector shots the engineer, puts a tool box on the dead mans pedal to keep the train going andf then gets shot himself, now there is a runaway which no one in the train company's dispatch office will believe, then it crashes right into the the station. I give this one 5 stars also

    7) The Fugitive made in 1993 featuring Harison Ford. Although this whol;e movie is not based around a train like the others, it has the best train wreck I think ever filmed. Harison Ford is wrongly accused of killing his wife and is on his way to prison in a bus, only the other prisoners have different plans. They take over the bus, but not before the driver flips and crushes the bus onto railroad tracks, then everyone is trying to get out while the train is coming. I have this movie and there is a part on the DVD which you can play and they show how they did this train crash. I was real impressed, it was a real train crash and not some model train mock up crash. The movie studios went out and bought 2 locomotives that didn't run anymore for $20,000 a piece which they placed out front and then the long train was pushed from behind with a running locomotive making this awesome train crash scene, the best I believe to date.

    8) Under Seige 2 made in 1995 featuring Steve Seagal as a Navy Seal who was reduced to a cook is on vacation with his daughter aboard a train which is take over by a mad man who believes the goverment betrayed him after designing a new space weapon which he takes back control of on this moving train so he can't be tracked. Watch as Steve try to stop this mad man which ends in a fiery crash in the end with another train, but you can tell it's either a HO model train or some kind of train crash mock up, so I only give this one 4 stars.

If you know of ay other type of train related movies, I would love to hear about them.

Flags of our Fathers. Featuring Illinois Railway Museums 9911A & The Nebraska Zephyr and 9911A Pulling the Erie-Lackawana Coaches. I didn't like this movie and only watched it for the Zephyr and the Heavyweight Coaches. During filming 9911A Brought her Train to LA, while BN-1 & BN-2 brought the Coaches.

The Nebraska Zephyr is more famous for being in the background in A League Of Their Own. Not much needs to be described about this movie, but for those who do not know, it is about a group of women who wanted to play baseball in the pro's in a male only league and formed their own league. Great Movie, Great Train, Personal Favorite.
