As you all know I am extending my layout and part of the extension will be an engine service facility. Does anyone have plans or links to a model or prototype that I can get ideas from? The facility should have up too 4 service tracks.

    thanks

    Paul

I think you could come up with your own plan if you use these simple rules of thumb:

Have at least one track for fuel/sand service for BOTH directions of traffic.

    Have a covered REPAIR shop.

One track for fuel and one track for sand deliveries.

Wash Rack. You can't have dirty engines unless you model the SP or The Rock. [IMG]

If steam, ASH PIT and COAL/FUEL OIL service area.

Use a grimy wash around fuel ground areas, gives it a "busy" feel.

Bachmann makes a nice desiel service kit and it had all kinds of neat kitbashing potentail. Whatever you do, make it look "busy" with spilled sand and fuel, air hoses, MU cables and brakeshoes laying around in or near racks and dump bins. Have fun!

You can try my site for a look at CSX's facilities at Selkirk Yard (ex Conrail). Go to the Yard Overview or Facilities shots to see how they do it up here in NY.

Also, you don't need a wash rack at every servicing facility. Locos need fuel more often then they need to be washed. [IMG] You can have one if you want, but not needed! Otherwise, I think Brent hit it on the head.

If it's a Major service point, put in the wash-rack. But if all they do is "fuel'm up and let'm go!", skip it. Thanks for the kind words guys, I do the best I can...

I stumbled upon this photo today of the Southern California Metrolink Facility.

The Union Pacific has a great plan for their engine facility at Hinkle.

    Here's a thumbnail version:

    According to their page:
<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>The 100,000-square-foot repair facility is comprised of several buildings, with offices, a warehouse, a parts-storage area, locker rooms, mechanical systems, an automated locomotive wash area, and four run-through tracks for repairing 12 locomotives at one time. The main building is 302 feet long and 226 feet wide.

There are two 340-foot service tracks outside the building, capable of handling ten locomotives at a time, five on each track.

In addition to scheduled maintenance, this facility handles running repairs; including changeouts of power assemblies, traction motors, alternators, air compressors, turbos, engine-blowers and electrical components.

PS: If you think the Metrolink facility above would make a great module, you should see the one at Fallbrook Junction. I can't find a good shot of it, but it is shown well in Pentrex's Above Southern California Rails video.
