Someone asked me how I was so certain a particular unit was ex-Conrail.... I told him to look for certain spotting features, such as this sub-lettering:

Also, look for the telltale Red classification lights.... CSX and NS got rid of their lights a while back:

Just curious, whats the purpose of those red lights? Conrail seemed like the only RR that had them.

    Dave:

The red lights were used as marker lights on the rear when the locomotives were used in helper service.

:( Its so sad to hear whats happening to my poor Conrail loco's :(

If I can recall, some locomotives just have the numbers on the side of the cab repainted...I used to be able to tell a loco's model just by its number. Now, I have to look at the side of it! It will take awhile to get used to.

    Yea, dave f, another Pittsburgher!! I don't feel as lonely! :D :D
