Here's a pic of a loco I see all the time... I finally passed it and had a camera: http://community.webshots.com/photo/63597356/69397608BtZmJY I started looking for info on what this is, but I am mostly running in to dead ends. I see it listed as a GP38-2 and the paint listed as ex-Helm? I must have missed this one.... Anyway.... any info on this out there?
That's the first time I have seen a SP (Southern Pacific?) engine in those colors. Or does that SP stand for something else.
This unit was leased to SP from Helm leasing. SP ended up taking ownership of this unit, and IIRC there were two others. SP just never repainted it, since UP was about to merge with them. At this time, UP may still have them and whether they are patched or not, I don't know. Greg Elems
That pic is about 2 weeks old.... That's exactly what it looks like today. It stays lashed to the UP unit that's in the next pic at my webshots site. Looks like they use them mostly for spotting cars on one of a couple of sidings. I've been facinated with it since the first time I saw it a couple of months ago... I was just glad to finally get a pic of it when it was not behind a building.
Heres a link to the other SP GP38-2 in the Helm scheme: http://ncespee.railfan.net/spgp38-2/sp4873.html Enjoy
Very interesting pics. I think that is the first time I have seen a locomotive that has gone the "other way" (from leasing company to railroad)! A good one for modellers
Just read on another forum, 4864 has been patched to UP 498 and still has the Helm colors as well. Anybody got a pic??
Where did you read that? As of a couple of days ago, it was exactly how it is in my pic... I may have to run down there and see sometime this weekend.

I drove by this morning to check it out.... There is no patch. I need to borrow my mom's camera again soon, and I'll go take a bunch of pics and get these posted soon.... It may be next weekend before I get the chance.
Ya can't believe everything in print and that goes for the web too. The other board, is where I read the history of those units, but that was some time ago. I tried a search and came up empty handed. That board has its share of muck mixers and so on. Anyway, I would like to see the pictures when you get a chance to post. Greg Elems
Yesterday, I caught a brief glimpse in a RR mag (can't recall which one) of a news pic of one of these units that has been patched. I believe it was 4873 but again I just breifly read the caption and am now experiencing amnesia of some sort. Knew I shoulda wrote it down.
