    From the TRAINS Newswire:

Modoc line no longer a through route

Union Pacific’s ex-Southern Pacific Modoc line is no longer a through route. According to the railroad, the middle of the route, from just south of Alturas, Calif., to just north of Wendel, Calif., will be torn up.

The remaining northern end, from Klamath Falls, Ore., to Alturas, will still interchange with the Lake County Railroad, an Alturas to Lakeview, Ore., shortline. The southern end, from Flanigan, Nev., to Wendel, will continue to interchange with the Quincy Railroad’s line to Susanville, Calif. Both shortlines are also former SP properties.

Southern Pacific had been trying to close that line for years. Guess UP decided they've got enough capacity to run the Modoc trains on other routes now. Another line we'll all miss...

Unfortunately it all comes down to viable $$$'s, if the route is not utilised then it's closed.
