I've been considering joining a local club, I figure what better way to learn the In's and Out's of operation then with a group of people, Can anyone explain the basic way one of these clubs works? Do Junior memberships (Im only 15) have any drawbacks from a normal one? (Im sure they do)
In basic terms a club is nothing more than a group of folks sharing a common interest. Often clubs have layouts, either fixed in one place or modular/portable. For a lot of people (like me) a club layout is the only layout, as space, time or money prevent building of a home layout. Since club layouts and materials are community property, decisions on use are made either by majority vote or by consensus (this is usually spelled out in a clubs by-laws) Most clubs offer discounted rates (dues) for junior members, sometimes accompanied by a lack of voting rights. However, you can still gain from having someplace to run, having people around who can assist with questions and advice and just general camaraderie.
