BNSF line between Cosnino (east Flagstaff) and Williams. Beautiful country, massive amounts of trains, and the Grand Canyon Railroad on the west end just for fun! Did I mention massive amounts of trains? The whole area is just a great place to camp and railfan at the same time!
My favorite spots to railfan are: In and around Galesburg, IL. I live here. So natually it be the first. Second would be Rochelle, IL and the UP mainline west past Clinton, IA. As you can tell I love double track Mainline railroading.
How about Triple Track Railroad? BNSF EX-BN EXXCBQ Race way between Chicago-Aurora IL (Grew up in La Grange) CP La Grange on the IHB...Heck with those two railroads saw BN,ATSF, IHB, SOO,CP, CN, CSX, NS, KCS, CONRAIL, DRGW, SP, IC plus Amtrak, Metra and others. Unless you want different Scenery those to spots in the same town pretty much covered it all...AND THE BEST PART? You let the trains come to you The IHB La Grange Park yard was known (and might still be) for it's storage of old units heading to EMD (Electro Motive Division-now Elecro Motive Diesel)
They didn't call it the 'racetrack' for no apparent reason... Sounds like a fantastic place to 'fan!!
================================= I was just over there today. Wife & I went for a bite of lunch at a local restaurant on Harlem Ave. We happened to be in the middle of lunch when me ole METRA job pulled into the Harlem Ave. Station. (#1233). I dashed out to say "Howdy" to the crew. Always action going on in that area. During morning and evening "rush hours" though, about the only thing you will see is commuter trains and mebbe an AMTRAK. The freights are "held out" during the "dinkie parade". But it is generally "photo friendly" on the station platforms. Just stay in the clear and dont block access for the passengers. CT
Being from NW Nebraska I would have to go with Crawford Hill, for that matter most anywhere on the Butte (Alliance West(North)) or Sandhills (Alliance East) Subs. Lots of coal and lots of power. Adam
