Thanks for the info, guys! Harbor Freight's too far away, but I'll look around some similar places. Nice to know even Wal-Mart has one. But... I'm going to go way off topic now, but am I the only one who has a hard time finding anything at Wal-Mart? They seem to sell a little of everything and if you know where to find things it's a great store. But for some reason their logic for arranging things and mine are way out of sync!
William, You aren't the only one. I can never find a dang thing in either one of ours! We now return to our regularly scheduled forum topic, "First exploits with the airbrush"
I've asked Santa for an airbrush, already have a compressor, so look out world I'm gettin' an air brush and I'm not afraid to use it.(not too afraid) Thanks for the inspiration, William.
It's great to see more people painting thier own. I was painting a pair of the Gulford/Pan Am cars today when I remembered I got my first air brush (Paasche H model) for my 9th birthday, 31 years ago on the 4th of Dec. Time flies when your having fun. Let's see more of those painted projects. Kel
Off Topic Again!! Even the workers at Wal-Mart don't know where anything is. I have found that sometimes, you just have to take the time and look for yourself. Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...
Glad to see you joining the fun, Greg! I started with stuff that would hide my klutziness well, and found it's a lot less intimidating that way. My wife actually was the one to get me to get off my butt. She's the one who gave me the undecs last Christmas, and she said, hey, if you screw up Atlas sells new undec bodies real cheap. So, what have you got to lose? Can't argue with that! (In fact, can't argue with a woman over anything, but that's another topic )
Whoo Hooo, the Brown Truck showed up! Now I have to pay a visit to Walmart or HD to get a ton of fittings. I'm using the compressor for general duties besides airbrushing so I want to exchange hoses and accessories w/o getting the wrenches out. Hope those quick connects/disconnects aren't too bulky.
greg, Congatulations on your chrissie present, look forward to seeing your progress. Going from my own experience using an airbrush has added a total new dimension to my modelling.
I use a cheap 2 gal air compressor. It has had quick connects, and a secondary moisture trap, and regulator, in addition to the stock one installed on the compressor. Got mine at Menards; that is, 5 years ago! Air in WY is VERY dry, so I don't usually have to worry about it, but a trap is extra insurance against fisheyes, and other assorted nasties. My Paasche VL works great.....
When you are spraying, and you get a spot that won't allow paint to stick, this usually makes the paint move away from the spot (like Moses parting the Red Sea). Oily residues cause this usually. This is why it is imperative to wash a model in soapy water before painting... When dry, the spot is paint-free, and around the spot is a larger buildup of paint. Looks like a fish's eye.....
Sometimes, after allowing to dry--a simple q-tip moistened in 91% alky will do the trick; others, a complete strip is required...
William, I ended up with a Husky Easy Air To Go from Home Depot (dumb site doesn't allow linking so you'll have to search on 496555). It was on sale for the holidays for $70, free shipping. 4 SCFM at 45 psi and 2 SCFM at 90 psi, max 135 psi. Certainly way more than enough for airbrushing. Went to Walmart (because I needed other things) and picked up two fittings packages. That's enough to turn everything into quick disconnects - the accessories that came with the unit and the future airbrush. Also picked up a moisture trap and filter at HD for $12. It's a great portable unit and the tank pumps up pretty quick. It is pretty loud but I suspect most compressors are. Now on the prowl for the airbrush. I think I'll end up with the Paasche VL kit.
I went to HD, asking for a moisture trap but (again) struck out. Third time hopefully will be the charm... Keep us posted on the airbrush!
William, Go to Home Depot's website and search for "169654". That's the moisture trap that I'm referring to. $12. Print it out and bring it to the store. Every HD that I visited had it in stock.
