Does anyone recall or have information on the first locomotive painted in the NS scheme in the early 1980's? I recall seeing a photo in late 1984 of a train near Portsmouth, Ohio with the "new" NS design, but have never seen or heard which diesel was painted first. Just curious.
It was unit 2833 (a GP38AC) painted in Chattanooga TN. Will try and get a pic of it and the last unit painted Southern (a GP30 by the way) posted this weekend. You may also want to check out Mike Ray's NS Locos site. NS Locos
Sorry that it took an extra week to get these pics posted. Was out of town on business. Anyway, here are the pics of the first NS loco painted along with the last Southern loco painted. All photos were taken outside the locomotive shop paint booth at NS's DeButts Yard in Chattanooga TN. in November 1983.
Thanks! Great info. on something I never knew but always wondered. But why did they go ahead and paint a Southern loco. at the same time when they knew it would be short-lived? Was the NS scheme an "experiment" and maybe just a test to see which paint scheme looked better?
I think they should have left them all in the the southern paint. they look a HOLE lot better then the NS paint I think... I think that NS should change to something other then just all black and white. maby bright red or something like that. Mike L
JD, Don't know why they were done together but I'm glad it was done that way. Those shots above are not the greatest but they sure bring back the memory of that moment of change.
