Well, phooey. I stopped at several area hardware stores this past week. Looking for latex paints in a flat- Which I have in the past used many times in painting backdrops, etc. But none have any which do not have a certain amount of gloss. From "satin" finish to high glossiness.

Can anything be found to overcoat in flattening out a gloss? What you guys use these days?

I had mine mixed at Menard's and I think it is flat. They had a number of choices from glossy down to flat as I remember. It's been a couple of years since I got it though. It may have changed.

I did some internet searching and Dutch Boy, the paint I bought, has a flat finish available. http://dutchboy.com/products/interior/wall/paints/dura-clean/index.jsp

Flat interior latex is still very common and available from all paint companies. Who would want to paint their living room with gloss paint? I'm wondering if maybe you were looking at exterior-grade paint, which is more often sold in satin finish.

Unless something has just changed, Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears/K-Mart, and Wal-Mart still sell flat in the el-cheapo brands. Though I realize those stores may not be convenient to your area.

About a year ago I wanted to buy a quart of el-cheapo flat from HD, but ended up buying a gallon instead. The quart price was around ten bucks, but gallons were on sale at $7.49...go figure. :tb-wacky:

That's typical. For every paint company.

Anywhere should have Flat Finish. Personally (I've professionally painted for a few years), stay away from the Home Depot Behr paint. It's watery, and covers like poop. You'll end up using more coats, which in turn means more paint. It's better to get a higher quality paint and pay a bit more, with less fuss. For cheap-o brands I prefer Valspar (at Lowes). If you have a Bejamin Moore dealer, they also have a contractor version called SPEC. It's pretty much the same paint as Regal, but about $10 off a gallon.

Those couple of hardware stores I checked are nationally known names/chain operations. Each has several outlets in this valley.

I was looking at interior paints, and did meander through the shelves. The closest I saw was a satin finish. It made no sense to me.

We do have probably most of the options available here. Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal*Mart, etc, etc, etc. So I guess the gas tank will suffer this wek as I check more places.

I bought a couple quarts of flat interior paint at Ace Hardware yesterday. The jip was that they couldn't mix the dark colors I wanted in the cheapest brand -- I had to buy one step higher.

That'll also be the case with most brands with darker colors. There isn't enough room in a Base quart for the paint and all the tint. Too much tint, and the paint won't dry, or mix correctly.

I always buy MIS-MATCHED paint. The type paint that was mixed wrong or didn't match the color that a customer wanted. Home Depot/Lowes/WalMart/Sherwin Williams/ etc. etc. ALWAYS have paint that they have had returned or such. Used to be they'd throw it in the dumpster, but not anymore (EPA rules) so they will have to pay to get rid of it or will sell the paint at a SUPER-LOW price, just so they are rid of it.

You can get tint added to mis-matched paint, but there are NO guarantees what will come out in the color department.

Am I wrong, but isn't SATIN flat finish?

Satin has a slight glint to it. It looks flat on a wall by itself, but put it next to true flat and it looks shiny.

You could save the gas and use the phone. Most likely save ya time as well, then use all the cash that would have been spent on gas to buy the paint. ;) :D

I would, but experience is that finding intelligent life on the other end can be a pain in the posterior. Being there in person works better.

I found my paint source, so that question is now solved.

Satin has a very light gloss.

Again, this depends. Most stores will try and sell mis-matched paint at a discount before disposing of it.

The EPA has nothing to do with it. Most everything is latex. If you let it dry in the can, you can put it out in the trash.

Add talcum power to the paint. It will flatten it.

Hmmm. Sounds like an interesting possibility. Although I'd better not raid my wife's supply. But then a fresh as spring breeze layout.... Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D Where does one get unscented?

I recently asked our local authorties about disposing of a couple items. One was latex paint. The above was exactly what they described. Just let it dry out, replace the lid and drop it in the regular trash.
