Near the intersection of Route 7 and 28 in upstate Maryland,NY near Oneonta there are 2 PRR GG1's parked on a siding. There are also a load of box and passenger cars along with Metro North F units. All right there for you to photo or even touch as there is no fencing. Awesome. Once weather up here get a bit nicer I'll be heading over to get some pictures. Brad
You can kind of see them on Google Maps. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.4...65,-74.962646&sspn=0.000825,0.001522&t=h&z=17 https://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.4...oid=XRmHiiM7fLtQsqKzAqBs5g&cbp=12,232.92,,0,0
It would be great to know who owns those, and what (if any) plans are for them. Definately a piece of history
The one that is seen on google maps is Amtrak 4934 (PRR 4917) and the other is Amtrak 4932 (PRR 4909). They are both owned by the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad. However 4932 was bought by the Henry Ford Museum, but according to the C&CV website it still has not been moved to the HFM yet.
Thanks for that information. For those thinking it would be cool to see one running again, the odds are highly against it. Each one was a rolling hazmat site with the PCB oil in their transformers. The cleanup cost would be very expensive. Converting them to run on the modern centenary power would be expensive. They were not very user friendly as far as crew comfort. You had to be a contortionist to get in and out of one.
From what I understand, many but not all had the transformers removed and have been cleaned up. Some still have residue in places.
