I am currently modeling the Katy Railroad in August 1966. I have the OER for January 1965
and the freight catalogue dated April 1969. Essentially, these two documents will give me the serial numbers for freight cars in 1964 and April 1969. I am not sure how often the OER (Operational Equipment Register) was issued. Does anyone know if there was an OER issued in January 1967 or between 1965 and 1967 and if so where I can get a copy?

Welcome to Trainboard, as well as the MKT column!

I can't answer your question about the OER, but I CAN point you in the direction of some good sources of info:

the MKT forum in Yahoo! Groups

    KRHS webpage

Also, you may be able to find an old OER at either eBay or any railroadiana show (I know they have some good ones in Ft. Worth in May of each year).

    Hope this helps

    Steve,
The OER comes out twice a year. I have a 1969 copy from January so that won't be much help. Ebay would be the place to find one eventually.

Thanks, Greg. I guess I'll be checking the railroadiana section of ebay a little more regularly.

I'm a little confused. What's the difference between this "OER", and an ORER? (Official Railway Equipment Register.) Is one better than the other for data on freight cars? I've an ORER that 'almost' fits my needs. Would an OER give even better info?

The ORER is what I meant to say. Sorry for the confusion. Type fast and no proof reading  causes mistakes.

OK. You had me wondering how I could have overlooked a publication that would be as significant as this one.

Actually, Greg, I am the one that typed too fast. Sorry for the confusion. Incidentally, I discovered today that the Kalmbach Library of the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) has a large listing of the ORERs and I found one dated October 1966 that suits my purposes perfectly. Based on the dates, the ORERs were issued quarterly. Unfortunately, the Kalmbach Library does not have any ORERs for sale, but if you are a member of the NMRA, they will copy selected portions for you at a cost of 25 cents per page.

If anyone is interested in ORERs for sale, the Westerfield Model Railroad Company has the following ORERs for sale on CDs:

    Aug 1888, Aug 1892, Aug 1897, Jun 1900, Jun 1905, Oct 1919, Dec 1930, Jan 1940, Jul 1950, Jan 1955, Jan 1959, Jan 1965, Penn RR 1893 - 1926 and Penn RR 1927 - 1950.

I believe these CDs are approximately $20.00
