The layout I'm constructing is to be set in the era just before diesels started taking over (1935 to 1955). My locale is, loosely, the Midwest (Illinois, Iowa)(flatlands!). I need to start putting together a freight fleet. But I'm not familiar with what type of cars fit in that time period. I know that 40 ft boxcars w/sliding doors should be suitable. Also, 40 ft wood reefers and 53 ft flatcars. But what about tankers (oil/chemical), gondolas, hoppers -grain & coal, & cabooses? Are there any sources on the Internet for this type of information?
Well, let's see: N-scale Supply may not have the best prices, but they make it up w/inventory! NScale Supply Micro-Trains has so many variations, I won't list them all. Just look them up here. For tank cars: ----------------- there's Atlas' ACF General Purpose 11,000 Gallon tank car (40s-50s) and Intermountain's Single Dome 8,000 Gallon tank car (kit) Gons: ------- Atlas 42' Gon Athearn 65' 6" Mill Gon Intermountain 40' Woodside Gon Intermountain 40' Gon (including Sugar Beet Gon) Covered Hoppers: Athearn PS-2 2893 Atlas PS-2 2bay Hopper DeLuxe Innovations 2bay Rib-sided covered hopper Kato ACF 70 Ton Closed Side Covered Hoppers Open Hoppers: ------------------- Athearn 3-Bay Offset Hoppers Athearn 3-Bay Outside Braced Hopper Atlas 70 Ton Hart Ballast Hoppers Atlas 90 Ton Hoppers Atlas 55-Ton Fishbelly Hopper Well, that's the list I came up with minus the MT cars. Please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong . [ November 03, 2005, 06:16 AM: Message edited by: Matthew Roberts ]
