You might want to try the freight car register. I don't know how to get your hands on a current copy, but my modeling club uses them from the '50s to accurately number cars. These are (were) released quarterly. I know there are published rosters of locomotives, but I am not sure there are any freight car rosters published by road. I remember a LARGE book, like the Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia, but it is only published every few years and concentrates on the cars and types, not the the roads.
