In 1957 "Wings of Eagles" was filmed on the Frisco NAS line out of Pensacola, Florida. For those not familiar with this movie it was a John Wayne WWII movie under the direction of the late John Ford and had several steam engine scenes. The Frisco 3749, a 0-6-0 type weighting 77 tons with an 11-foot wheelbase was used in the filming. After filming the Frisco 3749 set in Pensacola's Pen Yard for several years until it was finally sold to a local scrap dealer in 1968 or 1969. If I remember correctly this steam engine was still intact at the scrap yard in the late seventies. Anybody know what happened to this engine - is it still at Pensacola?

Frisco retired the 3749 in Sept.1952, from then until the Fall of 1956 it was leased to Alabama State Prision and worked thier branch from Huxford to the prision. It was then moved to Pensacola and used in the movie until early 1957 when it was placed into storage. It remained at Pensacola until the Fall of 1966 when it was sold for scrap to Pensacola Scrap Processors. It was moved there on 11/11/66 and then sold to a private individual in the Orlando, FL. area where remained until late 1970s when it was donated to the city. It is currently on display at the Church St. Station, Orlando, FL.

    Hello,

The City of Orlando is now giving away Steam Locomotive Frisco 3749 to a good home.
The Florida RR Museum is trying to get ahold of the locomotive & the 3-4 railcars that is sitting there.
I will know more information sometime this week.

Brian, that's good news as it always is when a steam locomotive can be saved from the scrap heap. Thanks for letting us know. :tb-biggrin:

Yes, it is alway good to hear about a Steam Locomotive being save from the scrap heap.

I will be working with The Florida RR Museum in the next two years or so about getting Frisco #3749 move from Florida to Arkansas at my RR Museum, The Eureka Springs Railroad Historical & Restoration Society & RR Museum.

At least Frisco #3749 was save from the scrap heap.
