An SLSF engine in KCS colors in Iowa.

Imagine the face of the railfan who just zapped in from 1950 in a time machine to see what the Rock Island was up to these days...

With the rail merger, the number of trains going through town will go from 4 trains a day, to 22 trains a day, over the next 3 years. It has already doubled.

If this unit is part of CPKC, then it's possible these are ex-MILW rails. Can you imagine trying to explain the progression of not only this unit's life, but also all the various rail company ownerships, right here in this spot, since the fifties?

Rainy or snowy shots are neat because I imagine the crew sitting nice and cozy in the locomotive.

Until the train stops, cause unknown, and the Conductor starts walking the ENTIRE train.

Or the cab heat does not work properly, if at all.

Nothing feels as good as those old side wall heaters, when you get back in the cab after a few hours of freezing your azz doing trainmans stuff.
I used to tell my conductor, I turned up his side wall heater for him.
Usually followed with some not so flattering comments about some of my family.
