Anybody make any models for these in N scale? I know Roundhouse did them in HO, usually 50 foot tankers, around 20,000 gallons.

Would the Atlas 23K tanks be a good starting point? Craig M?
I do recall a Tank Train logo'd car available some time back. I think it was Con-Cor.

Actually, although no one makes the actual tank cars used, the real ones had (I think) a 28,000 gallon capacity. I am modeling this train using Atlas's 33,000g tank cars painted black and using Microscales #625, Tank Train Decals. I already have 60 of these cars and am now finishing painting the last ten black and I have begun adding the decals (60 cars X oh say 15 decals a car...ouch). I'll have pictures of this train when its almost done or when I get it to a presentable stage. Untill then, I will continue decalling and will continue to aquire the rest of the MT's I'll need to convert this train!

Craig, you are doing the "oil cans" which were a specific type of the tank train. GATX's tank train system can be fit on a number of different size cars if I am not mistaken. They are certainly not the 33,000 gallon ones where I am, and some are actually white with TankTrain in black.

oops, I didn't realize they had different tank trains running about the country. I am modeling SP's oil cans. The reason I went with the 33,000 gallon cars is that they are pretty long (like the oil cans) and have a running board and hand rails running the length of the cars, like the oil can cars did (and do).

Now that I think about it, I did see an ALL white tank car unit train (about 60 cars long at least) in Salt Lake City this last summer, I wonder if it was a GATX train?

Craig which cars (manaufactuer) are you using for the oil cans. I can remember con-cor making these, with the "tank train" logo on the side sometime ago, not sure of their capacity. Going with atlas or some custom made car? Oops I just answered my own question from your posts above, atlas it is. Wow re-decorating 60 cars and decaling them, your back and neck must be stiff.

According to my research the Tank Train system was offered on several different tank cars as noted below

    Capacity (gal.) Car Type Cargo

    14,500 GS, Acid Phosphoric Acid

20,000 Exterior Coiled Fuel Oil, Crude Oil

    26,000 Coiled, Non-Coiled Various chemicals

    30,000 Non-Coiled Gasoline

    33,500 High Pressure LPG

    eNjoy

Thanks for the photos Don! Actually, I am modeling the cars that just have normal size reporting marks, the small trank train style lettering above the reporting marks and a few other decals here and there. Although Microscale makes the kind in the picture you posted, I think they look like rolling bill boards, and in N scale would make the train look tacky....but that's just my opinion! ;)
