Not too many clues. 1: Northern hemisphere, smokestack shadows makes that obvious. 2: Given that the shadows show noon-ish, they are pretty long, indicating fairly far north (and there is no sign of snow, probably spring). 3: Roundhouses! Poland was almost as big a steam mecca as China in the late 80s, early 90s. My guess, if not Poland, then one of the Eastern Bloc countries/ex USSR 'republics'. Bob in IDaho, who did guess a Chinese province in one of the other contests.
Not Russia, but close... still sticking w my previous guess of Eastern Bloc. The road leading from the left corner which looks to tunnel under a Station area, a major road but almost no vehicles. The road curves into a roundabout whose only function is to showcase a Hero of the Revolution type of monument in the center. Between the circle and the compass is a long, tall monolith of a building. In the top center is a cluster of a dozen randomly aligned long buildings, fairly screaming of a project style apartment complex. Bob in IDaho, who is bemused by the 1863 feet at the lower left. Is than an elevation, or the distance between the two tick marks? and why?
Thanks! As a looong time map freak (loved when they brought out vacuformed topo maps), I appreciate as being the proclaimed: 'the blind leading the halt' for this excersise. Is this my 15 seconds of fame? Bob in IDaho, whose incisive wit and bonhomie falls upon deaf ears these days since I retreated into retirement.
Did you find it yet? :tb-confused::tb-confused: BTW 1863 ft. is the distance between the marks and is just a reference.:tb-biggrin:
Got it! 53°20'49.98"N 15° 1'16.65"E Stargard Szczecinski, Poland Guess this means I'm done with the Intermediate level...on to the Advanced!!
Just thought I'd expand on this one - the number in the left is the scale of the photo, just like on maps. If you go back to the first clue / second post, it has 720-something feet there, indicating that between the second and third photos Scott zoomed out a little. The marks are of no use to me, since my Google Earth seems to think in metres, not feet But it can help to know the scale, as you can then set your local Google Earth to the right "size" to match details on the photo as you fly around. Or scale down the TB picture by four and zoom out Google Earth to 4x the shown scale, so you can fly around faster.
