Anyone seen any of the new GEVO's on CSX? At the beginning of the month, I saw # 5367 & 5371 in Rocky Mount, N.C., and those are my highest road #'s. Harold
I saw # 5370 & 5331 on the Juice Train today.... picture at: http://hhodnett.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=417845 Harold
Here's another photo: CSX 5323 leads another GEVO onto the Northbound A line http://hhodnett.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=417855 Harold
Tim, This shot is facing West and does have a couple of streets on either side of the tracks, but it does not last too long. Harold
What are the bottom and top of the GEVO numbers? I think I saw a few come through Gulfport, MS on the NO&M the last few days....? They sure looked like what you guys are photographing, especially the humongous square radiators!
William, I hate that you came to town and did not tell me... The first picture was in Benson, about 30 miles south of Raleigh and the second picture was in Pembroke, about 100 miles South of Raleigh where the CSX A line crosses the east-west Wimington sub line. Harold
5299 came through Gulfport today, heading for New Orleans...definitely impressive! However, it seemed to have a different, more pleasant sounding horn than older GE units. I don't know anything about horns, but is the GEVO horn a new design?
Well, let's see if I can help for the next time you come through. The KCS engine terminal is on the west side of 25th Ave. (US 49) around 22nd St. There will always be anywhere from 1 to 7 locos of various heritages and heralds, e.g. MidSouth GP-10's, and KCS GP-40's mostly with red lettering over gray, but occassionally one or two KCS GP-?'s with red over white. Today a GWWR GP-38(I think?) was working the Industrial Seaway job. This job requires a MidSouth Caboose for the 10-mile round trip, because the outbound run is a backup move, so two guys ride the back platform with a "whistle" and a radio. Every weekday afternoon, a CSX C36-7 local from Hathaway Yard, Mobile interchanges with KCS. I believe CSX still has a local every day around noon from Gentilly Yard, New Orleans, also to interchange with KCS. The daytime CSX through traffic is 4-8, but 20-30 come through overnight. You can generally count on a southbound (west by compass) double-stack with anywhere from 2-14 Tropicana cars on front to come through between 7:30 and 8 every morning. Otherwise daytime traffic is pretty random. Maybe someone who keeps track of CSX schedules for the NO&M Sub can give you better information.
Thanks! I,ll be through there in 7 or 8 months. Ill stop and look at the engine terminal. And watch for those csx trains. Thanks for the info!!!
I forgot to mention that the KCS engine terminal originally was the IC's coach yard and engine terminal, complete with turntable and shop. This function ended in the late 40's or early 50's when the IC stopped passenger traffic to Gulfport. I saw a copy of the IC plan for this area about 40 years ago. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to get a copy of this plan today. Maybe someone on the IC Fallen Flags forum would know?
