I recall recently reading an article about using Goo Off to clean tracks after painting them and ballasting. It mentioned that it works well put leaves a residue behind. Does alcohol clean this residue off? And, I thought that the article mentioned some alternatives? Or was I dreaming and I need to go back to the bright boy eraser and elbow grease?

Barry,it's called Goo Gone and the only reason it leaves a residue is because people don't wipe it off.

I find it interesting how many people will buy this stuff for its intended purpose and following directions have great sucess using it only to not follow those directions when working on their track. They then proceed to complain about it leaving a residue.(the directions say to apply ,let it set a few minutes ,then wipe clean)

I use both of those products to clean rails.
The Goof Off stuff comes in a small zippo lighter fuel type of tin, and smells like Xylene.

I use it for taking off paint that gets on the top of the rails when I lay new track and paint the rails. It's also good around the house for removint sticky pricetag labels, and the like.

I use Goo Gone for regular wiping of the rails. It smells like some citrus oil or something, and works like Goof Off, but is a lot less aggressive.

Goof Off will melt many plastics, so you have to test it first. :D

If using "Goo Gone" you must definitely wipe it off. Otherwise, you only end up spreading stuff from wheels and track all around the layout.

I've tried using Goo Gone, and it worked well. However, I went on to try MAAS metal polish. It works even better, and seems to leave the rails cleaner for longer. Same effort to apply & wipe clean.

I love this Board. I can honestly say that my layout would be a 3 x 5 Atlas plan with sectional track on plywood if it were not for the advice I have gotten from trainboard.com. And I swear I'm not a paid sponsor.
