Just a little good luck to our southern members effected by this Hurrican. I should get the effects by 1pm here in my area. Called for a 11am train out of Birmingham, so I should get my share from the cab. I'll have the camera if anything interesting happens. Prayers are with everyone.
Bob (PSG), Gregg (3rdRail) and Vincent (Kisatche) have specifically been in my thoughts and prayers through the night, along with others who may be in harm's way. Bob Woods
Well so far New Orleans was spared. The thing is, now the hurricane is aimed at someone else on the coast. I'm sure everyone knows someone who has family and friends in the areas affected. someone I work with has his whole family down there and he says he can't get calls through.
From what I've heard, some damage was done to the Superdome, which was being used as a shelter of last resort. Hope everyone rides out the storm OK- that whole area is real low-lying (New Orleans is below sea level....)
LT: Hurricane Katrina hit the east coast of Florida last Thursday about 110 miles south of where I'm located. It was classified as a category I hurricane when it hit the east coast of Florida. All we had from this storm were 15-20 mph wind gusts and rain for about three days. We were very lucky with this one. Last year we had two direct hits from Category three Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Both of these storms made landfall 15 miles north of me. We were in the eye of the hurricane on both occasions. A very eerie feeling BTW. For those that don't know what 130 mph wind sounds like for 24 hrs, it's like two large runaway steam loco's bearing down on you constantly for that period of time. Fortunately we have hurricane shutters that roll out. It takes about 40 minutes to have them all in place. The feeling in the house is that you're in an Abrams tank. Hope everyone in the New Orleans area is safe and out of harms way. Stay cool and run steam....... [ August 29, 2005, 02:06 PM: Message edited by: Powersteamguy1790 ]
I hope all is ok with everyone down there. The only experience I have had with catagory 2 and above hurricanes was listening to the wind that came out my first wife's mouth every time she wanted to say something to me. It, indeed, sounded like two runaway Big-Boys would have.
We are picking up some of the outer bands of thunder storms way over here to the west. And we are supposed to be on the "Dry Side". Wow, big storm.
Sitting in the relative 'safety' of Atlanta and just watching a lil heavy rains with wind I feel close enough to worry for all the friends I've made who are in the actual path of the storm yet oddly 'guilty' that I'm not suffering? Well, my creek has risen, does that count? No. Thoughts and prayers to all who aren't as lucky! Don
Even here in Australia there has been good media coverage, last night myself and Charlie (E8) we chatting online and looking at the radar as the hurricane approached New Orleans. I hope our friends have been spared from any loss.
I lucked out again and only have some downed branches in the yard. Still a little gusty here, about 30mph.
While not apocalyptic, this was certainly catastrophic, and will take years to recover. My prayers are with everyone affected.
good luck to all those who had to go through with it. now for a little bit of selfishness she screwed my plans big time. The one Amtrak train I really wanted to ride was the Sunset Limited being the only true coast to coast train in the US and the one most likely to go in any reshaping plan. This will probably be my last trip to the US and the train is going to terminate in San Antonio and Amtrak are not providing transport beyond San Antonio, so I just spent another US$700 booking additional accom and flights, for next week. really bummed, but I guess it could have been worse. got family somewhere in Louisiana, don't know where, not that close since grandpa died (they were not too happy he didn't come home after the war) but all in all I hope they are ok.
I'm also wondering about Hytec (Hank.) Who lives right on the Gulf near Biloxi, MS. He's not posted since a week ago. Did he evacuate? Safe? Boxcab E50
I just heard from a good friend of mine who lived in New Orleans. He used to post on the AOL N scale board as CatHatJim. He is staying in Memphis with relitives. About a year ago he finished remodeling his house and started working on his new layout big time. It is all under water now and he has no idea when he will get to go back and try to salvage anything.
Man,that sucks !!!!!!!!! I can't imagine the pain of that,Russ. Again,my prayers are with the hurricane victems.
