I have no clue what so ever. I see the sand which makes me think over in the middle east somewhere. But then I think somewhere at in the desert out west.
It looks pretty "electric" to me. I am trying to think of electrified lines through deserts. I am coming up a blank right now.
Only one of the lines into the station appears to be electrified, yet most of the lines outside the station appear to be electrified. Most of the freight(?) cars are very short, the few remaining are extremely long, or perhaps special purpose articulated cars with no visible separation between units. What I assume to be residences appear to be small, tightly packed, with only alleys between them. My first impression is African, though as SD74 said, I can't think of any widespread use of electric in Africa. Where else in the world would you have arid conditions, significant passenger traffic, European style cars, and combined electric/non-electric.......one of the "-stans" south of Russia, maybe? Darren, you certainly know how to stir brain cells...:tb-cool:
Well now you say that and I get to looking I see some coal cars. Doesnt australia ship alot of coal? And dont they have eletric lines?
CMIIW, but for me those mast doesn't look like catenary masts, but more like lights. So there might be a lot of night work going on in the freight area? Just my two cents...
If I were going about this I would narrow down to places that have electrification, and then start with the drier climates and go on some Google Earth expeditions to try and locate something that looks like this. I don't know how anyone could tell that these are European style carriages. It's blurry enough here that I wouldn't necessarily recognize them as rail cars except that they are on rails. I am looking at those buildings and thinking that a lot of them have roof porches, which are often used in hot climates in residential architecture to provide a cool place to be at night after a hot day. The photo is blurry enough that I can't tell for sure. The shadows are long enough that I would have to say that this doesn't really look like an equatorial location. I would say the likely latitude is at least 20 degrees N or S and possibly a little bit more. If this is still unsolved when I get home I will go on an expedition and see if I can find it. Adam
I would say the Middle East, Iran or more likey Syria or Jordan, with a possablity of Iraq. Also those seem to be light poles not electric overheads.
Hmm, I think you're correct about light poles vs. electric. Therefore, all of northern Africa becomes eligible, especially Morocco or Algeria where there are significant mining operations. I still think those are European-style carriages, which would exclude Australia, Mexico, and the US Southwest. Would a central African country be a possibility? I don't know anything about their economies and cultures.
Having spent a bit of time in the Middle East, I don't think it's Iraq. The terrain is reminiscent of Anbar or southern Najaf Province, but IIRC, rail operations in those areas is almost non-existent. I think, off-hand, that it could be in the crescent from Kuwait to the UAE.
I can see Anbar or Najaf as being two locations. Now, that I look at it more, I do believe that this isn't Iraq. I consulted some of my older Trains mags about Iraqi railways and then looking back at the photo there seems to be no recent construction to indicate that any damage would have been repaired. I would assume that this would have been a target for the coalition, considering they targets smaller railway structures. With that in mind I am leading towards Iran or perhaps UAE. Looking at the terminal and it's size it would seem to indicate it is under utilized as there is little parked cars in the parking lot. Looking at the arrangments of the lights, would seem to indicate that they are yards lights for nightime freight operations.
I think it's Iraq - it looks like one of the stations I used to see while flying around over there. A lot of the rail terminals over there have this same basic design. Hmmmm....
Well, at least I said it was reminiscent of Anbar. I wonder when that picture was taken? In looking at Tallil, I know the latest that one was taken was 2004.
Now how many folks said it wasn't Iraq! Congratulations! TexasNS Al Fallujah, Iraq Location submitted by Stourbridge Lion
