I was looking thru some photos and thought I'd post a few to share. The NS GP59's are unique animals, as they were one of EMD's offerings that didn't catch on ( a first, huh? ) Here's one of my favorite units: Harold
Notice #4608 has a "rounded" edge cab and nose... this was supposed to be to make the units more aerodynamic (!?). This unit was one of the EMD demo units and the "aero" touch did not make it into production. Harold
Other than cosmetics, what made the GP59 different from a GP60? Was there any substantial difference? Just curious.
Internally, the GP59 is powered by a 12-cylinder 710G3A engine capable of 3,000 horsepower, while the GP60's are powered by a 16-cylinder 710G3A engine capable of 3,800 horsepower. Chris Toth
A neat thing about this unit (4608) is that around the door sills you can still see the EMD demonstrator blue. She's still a good unit racking you the miles here lately out of Linwood.
Hello Sou2601, Welcome to TrainBoard! ( or should I say welcome neighbor! ). I have not noticed the EMD colors as you have mentioned, but will be sure to look for them the next time I see them! Harold
Hi Harold, The blue paint is only visable if the cab door is open. It's along the sill (I guess that's what it's called on a loco) and the edge of the door. It's a hard spot to spot!
Small World Dept. - Talking about GP59s and two of them show up in one trip. Had 4637 as a leader and 4611 trailing the other day on a westbound. Should have known that they'd be set up for long hood lead. Had to run 4637 backwards (short hood leading) with all the heaters going full blast to keep the frost off my toes. Typical 4 banger...very noisy but at least it didn't ride too bad. Also had a weird vibration at idle that rattled my dental work. Must be the missing 4 cylinders.
