6013 was also painted in the single stripe scheme. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=115543
Yep, that looks right for the "Yampa Valley Flyer" back in '66. It ended service in '67 when the mail contract was lost, but towards the end, several different car types were used. Maybe to help increase passenger service/ridership. Over the years, I remember seeing the "heavyweight", along with various tail cars. Wonderful pic:thumbs_up:
This topic has steered a bit off the rails...... I aim to bring it back around, so stay tuned for some SD7's and 9's!
The Rio Grande bought 5 SD7's in May of 1953 (5300-5304), and returned to EMD for the newer SD9 (5305-5314) in July of 1957. They were both delivered in this scheme, captured by Otto Perry: Note the odd block letter numbers on the cab! All other classes of D&RGW power had the more stylized numbers. They served the 'Grande until 1991, and one soldiers on today on the Northwestern Pacific. Another Otto Perry view: Here's a more familiar scheme, SD7-flavor: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/drgw/drgw5301s.jpg And an SD9: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/drgw/drgw5306ags.jpg
I was sure there was a difference between SD7 and SD9 paint - namely, the striping color change from yellow to Aspen Gold.
happily, one more soldiers on in Canon City. 5305 is alive and well and working on the Royal Gorge Route. the only SD9 to have its nose chopped by the D&RGW (a rebuild following an accident). i celebrate seeing this old beauty every day. dave f.
OK, you caught me... I searched http://www.drgw.org/reference/paint2.htm and found that both had the same style scheme, but the SD7's had the ochre stripes while the 9's came with Aspen Gold stripes.
Here is a photo of 5307 clearly showing the Aspen Gold color of the SD9s. http://ncespee.railfan.net/drgwsd9/drgw5307.html
This topic has slipped... And here's a boost! F-units!! Starting with the units that started it all, the EMC FT's! Otto Perry captured a set of FT's in their as-delivered scheme at now-daylighted Tunnel 28:
FT's 540A-551D (5401-5514) were purchased by the Rio Grande in 1942-1943. They were traded in on GP30/35's, and an F7 in 1961, and 1965. Here's a color shot from DRGW.org:
After a couple years, the FT's began receiving a new nose treatment, as shown by the postwar Prospector at Bull Gulch just west of Tunnel 2: Another Otto Perry!!
One last piece of Otto Perry's work shows an FT set hard at work on the 2.4% in Price River Canyon, west of Castle Gate, UT:
Another Otto Perry shot at Plainview, CO shows the new 4-stripe liver as applied to the FT's--check out the 'Perlman Mallet'!
Pennsy Influence This one looks like it could fit in nicely with Pennsy's paint schemes of old. These are sweet shots all, Hemi. Where are you scrounging them up from?
